IT-Alert, new tests from 22 and 26 January: the Regions involved and when the alarm will sound

The first tests of 2024 are arriving IT-Alert, the national public alarm system of the Civil Protection which will ring and send notifications to mobile phones. The round of trials – which follows those of December and September-October – will take place between January 22nd and 26th. Alarm simulations will be sent for specific risk scenarios.

As in the case of the December test, the purpose of this new experimentation consists in sending (simulated) alarm messages to specific risks in limited territories. This time, however, the test will be on a larger scale, with 12 Regions involved (Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Piedmont, Sardinia, Sicily, Tuscany, Valle D’Aosta and the Autonomous Province of Bolzano) e three risk scenarios: collapse of large dams, major accident in industrial plants and nuclear accident (scenario, the latter never tested before). Testing for industrial accidents will be carried out within a 2 km radius of establishments subject to the Seveso Directive.

How the tests will take place

The test involves sending a text notification it’s a sound signal to all smartphones connected to the cells covering the chosen areas. Here are the messages that will be sent:

Major accident in an industrial plant

TEST TEST This is an IT-alert TEST MESSAGE. We are SIMULATING an industrial accident in the area you are in. To find out what message you will receive in the event of real danger from an industrial accident go to www.it-alert.gov.it TEST TEST

Collapse of a large dam

TEST TEST This is an IT-alert TEST MESSAGE. We are SIMULATING a dam collapse in the area you are in. To find out what message you will receive in case of real danger due to the collapse of a dam go to www.it-alert.gov.it TEST TEST

Nuclear accident

TEST TEST This is an IT-alert TEST MESSAGE. We are SIMULATING a nuclear accident in a plant located in a foreign country with potential repercussions in the area where you are located. To find out what message you will receive in the event of real danger from a nuclear accident go to www.it-alert.gov.it TEST TEST

We remind you that, as with previous experiments, upon receiving the message nothing will need to be done: these are in fact tests before IT-Alert becomes fully operational.

We also remember that the test does not create no risk to our privacybecause the notification is sent directly via the telephone cells without any data exchange to or from our smartphone through the internet.
