Salmonellosis: symptoms and risks

It is good to understand what the actual numbers are risks in case of consumption of eggs with certified presence of salmonella. At the same time, we list the symptoms to pay attention to, in order to recognize potential signs of infection.

When we talk about salmonellosis, explains the Ministry of Health, we are referring to one of the most frequent pathologies of animal origin in humans. The symptoms are varied and can appear between 6 and 72 hours after ingestion. In most cases, however, the effects are revealed between 12 and 36 hours.

In the event of a benign course, the subject will have to endure a compromised state of health for 4-7 days, unless hospitalization is required in cases of aggravated infections. In situations of this type, hospitalization may be necessary.

Those who are particularly receptive are mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. Obviously focusing on humans, the main symptom is given byenterocolitis. This indicates strong inflammation of the digestive tract. Name that derives from the fact that it involves enteritis of the small intestine and colitis of the colon:

  • fever;
  • nausea;
  • vomit;
  • diarrhea;
  • abdominal pain.

There disease will be more severe in the presence of a greater number of ingested microorganisms. Distinctive elements in the organism’s reactions are, however, also connected to specific resistance factors of the subject.

This means that salmonellosis can be more serious in some people than in others. Children, the elderly, pregnant women, those suffering from sickle cell anemia and those suffering from HIV are most at risk (in the latter case there are also recurrent cases of non-typhoid septicemia).
