Colombian President Gustavo Petro used his speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday to call for peace summits to resolve the conflicts between Ukraine and Israel and the Palestinians so that humanity can focus on fighting climate change.

Petro, Colombia’s first leftist leader, is seeking peace and surrender deals in his own country with rebels and criminal groups to end a six-decade conflict that has killed at least 450,000 people.

Ukrainians see no end in sight after the 500 day war

“I propose an end to the war so that we have time to save ourselves. I propose that the United Nations hold two peace conferences as soon as possible. One on Ukraine and one on Palestine, not because there are no other wars in the world like my country, but because it would show how to make peace for all regions of the world,” Petro, 63, said.

Petro called climate change the “mother of all crises” and said the world should work towards a carbon-free economy.
