In Italy we quickly went from the desire to protect healthcare personnel at all costs to the same old scenario. It all happened extremely quickly, from Covid-19 to the post-emergency. A fake support, which lasted a moment, both from a political and social point of view.
There white coats protest highlights it but it’s not the only news making noise. While the government talks about non-existent patriarchy, the Healthcare discriminates against its workers. If on the one hand the executive claims to want to protect the family, on the other hand anyone who is expecting a child and wins a competition cannot sign the required contract.
Post pregnancy contract
After the support for the words of the Minister of Education and Merit, Giuseppe Valditara, it would be interesting to hear the opinion of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also regarding the USB complaint: “Discriminatory practices against women in hospitals.”
The executive supports families (some), on paper, and in the meantime the healthcare case breaks out in Lazio. Numerous women competition winnersready to sign their contract as nurses, who are “asked” to postpone the start of the activityand therefore of the receipt of salary, until the end of compulsory maternity leave.
There are many cases, from San Giovanni to San Gallicano and Regina Elena. What further amazes is the methodology. There was no need to record conversations that took place in offices with tightly closed doors and windows. Everything happens through certified email.
The public administration asks, without mincing words, to postpone the signing of the contract. Guaranteed place but at the end of the 5 months required by law which protects the right to work for all women who are pregnant or have recently given birth.
The complaint
Harsh words Licia Peranational director of the Public Employment Federation of the Basic Trade Union. The cases are many and widespread, beyond the most recent ones reported at the moment: “The latest occurred in the ASL Roma 2, in that of Rieti, in the San Giovanni hospital and in the Ifo, Regina Elena and San Gallicano.
Below is a portion of what is reported in the digital letters spliced to the unfortunate nurses: “Having taken note of the note with which you communicated to us your maternity status, we inform you that you will be able to take on service at this hospital only at the end of maternity leave (…) at the end of compulsory maternity leave”.
Pera reiterates how the principles of equality are constantly ignored between hospitals and local health authorities. Frontal attack, then, aimed at the Region. He spoke of the “lightheartedness of the Health management”, already urged to intervene and committed to “shrugging”.
The protest of doctors and nurses
The bad mood, to say the least, overwhelms the hospital world as a whole, also involving doctors. His voice rose in the streets against the Maneuverdeprived of the necessary resources to “save the national health service and its professionals”.
Slogans are shouted that should make the legs tremble in political buildings: “Mass resignation” and “The nurse is leaving”. The limit is full and professionals, without the connection with patients, could take a step back. A participation that reached 85%, with mobilizations from all over Italy.
Here is the analysis of Francesco FelettiAnaoo secretary of the Romagna Local Health Authority: “Professionals are few and difficult to recruit. Why do they have to go to the underpaid ward? The salary of a newly hired doctor is 2,788 euroswith which he must pay from the insurance (from 1,000 to 5,000 euros per year) to the Enpam social security fund”.
The maneuver promises increasesbut minimal: 14 euros for doctors And 7 euros for nurses. Added to the salary component is the stress on private life. Saturday and Sunday we work, then the nights and ready availability, for what? Of discriminatory treatments, reduced economic opportunities and constant aggression.
