In the next 5 years 100% innovators will use it to generate ideas

When we talk about companies that, with their ability of innovation, are changing the world, the common denominator is not expenditure. These realities do not see innovation as a function, but as the strategy. From the mobility transformed by Waymo, to the new era of social drinking with Athletic Brewing, to the Gamified Education of Duolingo, the leaders of the Fast Company 50 Most Innovative Companies show that growth is no longer born from small improvements, but from the ability to anticipate changes and build new business trajectories before others. Not surprisingly, 94% of these companies say they want to enter new markets in the coming years, and 88% put innovation at the top of the strategic agenda, like financial performance. The data confirm the value of this choice: the companies on the list have recorded total returns for shareholders well higher than the sector peer.

Ai as an accelerator

The role of artificial intelligence for these companies is already central. Today it is mainly used for Concept Development (75%), Idea Generation and prototyping (63%), testing and validation (69%). “However, in just five years, the scenario will be completely different, with Otre 90% of the companies will adopt it until launch and growth. Artificial intelligence is becoming the new toolbox of the innovators’ tools, but it is not a substitute for human creativity. It is a multiplier: it allows you to dream bigger and to know data, processes and customers much better. The real difference makes those who know how to combine the potential of the machines with the intuition of the people,” Emanuele Veratti, Senior Partner and Digital Practice leader of Bain & Company declared. Yet even among the samples of the AI, a message is strong and clear: the innovation that counts remains human. 89% of respondents say they are priority to understanding the real needs of customers with respect to algorithmic shortcuts. 72% systematically integrate direct feedback and empathic insights in the development path. Many companies are experimenting with Synthetic Personas, archetypes generated by AI who simulate consumers’ behaviors and choices. Used well, they accelerate tests and expand the chances of analysis. But they do not replace real people: they remain tools to enhance, not to replace, authentic listening.

Overcome the fear of risk

The most innovative companies learned not to put all the eggs in the same basket. To balance security and audacity, 79% adopt two distinct tracks: on the one hand the innovation “close to the core”, made of gradual and more predictable improvements; on the other, exploratory and disruptive projects, with which new growth paths open. This dual approach allows you to keep the basics of the main activity solid, but without giving up the bets that can change the future. “Many companies end up concentrating the great majority of their efforts on what they already know, remaining firm in a model focused on the core, nothing on the new, even if this shows a level of maturity and a competitive intensity such as not to enable the ambitions for creation of desired value. The most visionary leaders have instead understood that two engines are needed: one for the efficiency and expansion, the other for the discovery and choices Audaci of redefinition of their business positioning.

The future, a combination of ai and human ingenuity

Bain’s research shows that the future of innovation will not be guided by AI alone, but by the combination of artificial intelligence and human ingenuity. Leaders do not see technology as a substitute for people, but as an ally that amplifies creativity, imagination and skills of understanding customers. “The companies that will be able to combine the speed and calculation power of the I with the intuition, empathy and vision of people will not only launch new products more quickly, but will build solutions that will have a real impact on the life of customers. In a context in which time is the most poor variable, this synergy remains the true secret of lasting innovation”, concluded the experts.
