Inflation reaches 2% in March, bills and food expenditure increase

Inflation continues to increase in Italy. In March i prices of consumer goods are grown by 0.4%marking the fourth consecutive month of ascent. The figure is clearly growing compared to 2024 and reached 2% per year, considered by economists the threshold for a healthy growth system.

To determine this sudden leap, of almost half a percentage point, are above all the so -called volatile goodssuch as energy and food, which are excluded from background inflation. This figure, in fact, remained stable at 1.7% per year.

What assets have grown up in price and which ones have dropped

The increase in the inflation of March 2025 is dragged by the expenses for the home and energy. No other good grows so much in price and, at the same time, weighs on that extent on the total data. Even if it is an extreme increase, 6.4% are among the least worrying data. Often the energy oscillates, such as food products, on a monthly basis. This is why both are excluded from the background data.

The categories of goods and services that are grown more than the average I am:

  • Housing, water, electricity and fuels: +6.4%;
  • receptive and catering services: +3.2%;
  • Alcoholic drinks and tobacco: +3.2%;
  • Education: +2.9%;
  • Other goods and services: +2.7%;
  • Food products and soft drinks: +2.6%.

Another group of goods has grown in price, but less than the average:

  • health services and health expenses: +1.4%;
  • recreation, shows and culture: +1.4%;
  • Clothing and footwear: +0.7%;
  • Furniture, articles and home services: +0.3%.

Finally, there are also some price drops:

  • Transport: -0.9%;
  • Communications: -4.6%.

The shopping cart is growing

Istat, which has processed the data on inflation, also reported an increase in the price of the so -called shopping cart. This is the set of assets that the Statistics Institute considers among the most common in the purchases of Italians. We mainly speak of food goods, for personal and home care, which are among those increased more in March.

The result is a growing growth than that of February. On a tendential basis, compared to a year ago, the shopping cart is increased by 2.1%slightly more than inflation.

Because inflation in Italy must remain low

March is the fourth month consecutive of growth for the infulation in Italy. The data reached 2%. It has been the maximum since 2023, when it was still in collapse by the peaks of the pandemic. Basic inflation remains stable for several months around 1.7%, a comforting figure that however does not completely dissipate concerns for the rise in prices.

At the moment, inflation in Italy remains below the European average and around what the main economic theories consider the percentage of the ideal price growth. However, the problem of the Italian economy is very low growth. Istat provides for a growth of 0.8% For 2025, too weak for these inflation levels. The risk is that, with further price increases, the phenomenon of stagflation occurs, in which the economy does not grow but the costs for families rise, eroding purchasing power.
