The Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, with the notice published in the Official Journal on 22 September 2026, raised the Supersmart Open Deposit rate to 2.25% gross per year at maturity, from the previous 1.75%. This is the most transversal line of postal savings: anyone with a Smart Libretto can activate it on fixed liquidity, without age or income requirements. For those who keep the money in the book while waiting to decide what to do with it, it therefore becomes more convenient to tie it up.
How the Supersmart Open works
The Supersmart Open Deposit is a restricted provision of the sums already present in the Smart Booklet, issued by Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and placed by Poste Italiane, therefore guaranteed by the State.
An amount is tied up for 360 days and upon expiry the principal is collected plus interest at 2.25% gross. Until September 21st the same line, with an identical duration of 360 days, yielded 1.75% gross.
The minimum amount is 500 euros and the deposit can be deactivated at any time, even if by withdrawing the sums first you lose the interest and only pay the base rate, currently 0.001%.
Unlike dedicated lines, the Open has no limits: it can be activated by all adult customers who hold a Smart Booklet, single-headed or joint-headed with separate signature.
Precisely because it has no requirements, the rate is lower than the 3.25% reserved for the other Supermart Deposit lines: Young, Pension and Minors.
How much it makes: the calculations
2.25% is gross and recognized only upon maturity.
The interest on Supersmart Deposits does not benefit from the preferential rate of 12.50% of savings bonds but is subject to the ordinary withholding tax of 26%, to which is added the stamp duty of 0.20% on the sums set aside.
Let’s take an example of performance.
On 10,000 euros tied up, 2.25% gross is worth 225 euros in 360 days, which, net of withholding tax and stamp duty, drops to around 145 euros.
For the exact calculation it is best to use the official simulator on the Poste Italiane website.
Is Deposito Supersmart, Bfp or a deposit account better?
At the same gross rate, postal savings bonds and government bonds, taxed at 12.50%, leave a higher net income in your pocket. The Open, on the other hand, has no stringent requirements and is deactivated when needed.
It is also worth comparing it with deposit accounts, which today offer higher gross rates for similar durations.
Pay attention to documents
The updated Information Sheet and Summary Sheet are available in post offices and on the Poste Italiane Supersmart Open depot website.
It is worth reiterating once again that the rate is recognized on expiry and that Cdp can interrupt the offer at any time. Better to read the current sheet before thinking about a provision.
