Meta wants to go a step beyond chatbots that simply answer questions. With Muse, the new AI-based personal assistant, the goal is to allow the system to directly deal with concrete tasks, using apps, services and tools made available by the user.
The initial launch is expected in the United States and at the basis of its operation is Muse Spark, the model developed by the company to manage requests that require multiple steps and coordinate the tools necessary to complete them. This is the principle that distinguishes the new assistant from a normal conversational system: it does not have to limit itself to explaining what to do, but can intervene to carry out some of the required operations.
What is Muse and how Meta’s new AI agent works
Muse is an example of agentic AI, that is, systems capable of receiving a goal, establishing a sequence of actions and interacting with applications or services to achieve it. In his case, you just need to describe in natural language what you want to achieve and let the agent develop an operational plan.
To interact with external platforms you can take advantage of pre-made integrations. If a service is not supported but provides a public API, Muse can set up a connection using the credentials provided by the user, while when no such interface exists it can operate through a browser. In this way he is able to move between different tools to complete the various steps of the task.
For operations that require more time, it is able to continue working even after the app is closed and then provide an update on the result or any steps still necessary.
The system is also designed to remember details that emerge in conversations and take them into account in subsequent requests. Meta mentions the possibility of suggesting the menu for a dinner based on preferences already communicated or remembering any food restrictions of the guests before sending the invitations. The context accumulated over time can then contribute to future tasks, without having to provide the same information every time.
To use Muse, Meta has provided a dedicated website, as well as an app for iOS and one for Android. The agent will later also come to its AI glasses, thus extending availability to wearable devices. At the moment, however, the company has not provided precise details on the timing and methods of this integration.
What it can do: from sending emails to making purchases
The functions cover different aspects of digital life. Muse can send emails, organize trips, fill out forms, plan activities and make online purchases. It can also connect to services like the calendar and, according to Meta, address more complex requests, such as looking for solutions to reduce a bill or adapting a training program when the person’s commitments change.
However, not all steps are carried out without supervision. Before operations considered sensitive, such as sending a message or completing a purchase, Muse asks for confirmation. Automation can thus proceed in the intermediate phases, leaving the final decision to the person when the action produces concrete consequences.
For payments, Meta has integrated Link from Stripe, which can generate a single-use card without directly exposing the data of the real one during the transaction. Support for Shop Pay and 1Password is also provided, so as to allow the agent to use existing credentials.
How to use Muse also on WhatsApp
In addition to the dedicated channels, Meta allows you to interact with Muse directly via WhatsApp. The experience is designed to be similar to a normal conversation: just text the assistant what you want to achieve, just as you would text another person.
Muse therefore joins Meta AI already present on WhatsApp, but was created with a different purpose. It is, in fact, a personal agent designed to take charge of activities and carry them forward. Through the chat the user can receive updates and provide any necessary confirmations, while the system works on the connected tools to complete what is requested.
What data does the AI assistant use and how does Meta want to protect it
To operate on connected services, a system of this type inevitably needs permissions and personal information. Meta states that it is the user who chooses which applications to connect and what level of access to grant: for e-mail, for example, you can only allow reading or also authorize the sending of messages.
From a technical point of view, Muse works inside Muse Secure VM, a dedicated virtual machine in the cloud with its own browser. This is where the data and login credentials of the connected services are stored. Sentinel also operates in the same environment, a separate system-level agent that monitors actions directed towards the Internet and can request the person’s consent before proceeding.
According to the company, Muse cannot directly view passwords and payment methods. Credentials are stored in a protected space and can be used without being shown to the agent. Meta also claims that conversations and data in the virtual machine are not shared with its advertising systems. You can revoke granted access, choose not to use your interactions to train the company’s AI models, and ask Muse to forget specific information learned during conversations.
To check what is happening, the assistant also provides a history of the operations already carried out and those it intends to carry out. Meta also announced Muse Confidential VM, which the group plans to introduce later in 2026. The entire virtual machine, including conversations and personal data, is expected to be encrypted with a key under the user’s control.
How much does it cost and when will it arrive in Italy
Muse can be used for free within certain limits, while for those who need to entrust it with a greater number of activities there are two subscription formulas: Power for 20 dollars per month and Maximum for 100 dollars per month.
Even to access without a subscription, however, you will need to provide a payment card. An indicator will show how much usage margin you have left, letting you know when you’re getting close to the maximum limit.
As far as Italy is concerned, however, we will still have to wait. In fact, Meta has not communicated when the service will be available in the country or indicated what the next stages of international expansion will be.
