The trend of fuel prices in 2024

At the beginning of 2025 it is possible to have an estimate of the Fuel costs in 2024. The prices of petrol and diesel have in fact suffered a rather fluctuating trend in the course of the whole year just passed and this also because of important geopolitical factors. To influence the changes of prices more, however, were factors such as the oscillation of the oil price, the state excise duties (which the government has decided to increase) and the demand for fuel.

By putting the data together, it was possible to estimate how:

  • The petrol started from 1.77 euros per liter, touched a maximum of 1.92 euros per liter in April and finally closed the year at 1.76 euros per liter;
  • The diesel, on the other hand, started the year at 1.73 euros per liter, reached the peak of 1.83 euros per liter in February, and then dropped to 1.67 euros per liter in December.

In the last twenty years, thanks not only to the cost but also the arrival of alternatives to petrol and diesel, the Green consumption In Italy it is decreased by 45.8%moving from 21.5 billion liters in 2002 to 11.6 billion liters in 2024. The total expenditure for the purchase of petrol, moreover, dropped by 5.7%. On the contrary, the diesel saw an increase of 10.5%, since 2002 when it reached 25.6 billion liters consumed, at 2024 with 28.3 billion liters. Even the expenditure for diesel has grown considerably, going from 21.9 billion euros in 2002 to 48.6 billion euros in 2024, with an increase of 121.9%.

A fact that can be extrapolated from this price trend and consumption is how much the Italians have paid between excise duties and VAT, or Ben 38.5 billion euros. It is, also in this case, a figure growing by 1.4% compared to 2023. Since the price of fuels has dropped, but not the paid contribution, a data can be confirmed discounted: the price at the pump is still strongly determined by taxes.
