Zuckerberg creates an AI agent to help him as CEO of Meta: the direction of the company

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta (the company that develops Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, among many apps), is experiencing firsthand what many technology companies imagine as the next evolutionary leap in the world of work: an AI agent designed to directly support top decision-making. This is revealed by the Wall Street Journal in an article published on March 22nd. The idea is as simple as it is ambitious: allow the CEO to access data and responses in real time without going through hierarchical levels. This way, the entire organization can become faster, leaner and potentially more efficient. This project nicknamed “Zuckbot”, still in the development phase, allows us to understand Meta’s philosophy, which aims to integrate artificial intelligence in a widespread way into the daily activities of its employees. At the same time, the company is investing in experimental platforms, where AI agents can even interact autonomously with each other, anticipating a scenario where it won’t just be humans collaborating online. This story, however, raises technical and security questions, especially when these systems gain direct access to sensitive tools such as email and operational applications.

What the AI ​​agent does and what it means: Zuckerberg’s philosophy

Zuckerberg is developing a sort of “AI CEO” using an artificial intelligence system designed to support him in leading the company. When we talk about an AI agent, we mean autonomous software capable of not only responding to requests, but performing tasks, taking initiatives and interacting with other digital systems. In this specific case, this agent is used to obtain information in a more direct way, avoiding the traditional steps between teams, managers and various reports. This reduces the so-called “chain of command”, i.e. the sequence of hierarchical levels through which information and, therefore, decisions pass.

This experimentation reflects a progressive transformation within Meta, which has approximately 78,000 employees. The declared objective is to accelerate the pace of work and make each individual more productive thanks to native artificial intelligence tools, i.e. technologies designed from the beginning to integrate AI, and not simply added at a later time. In this context, the Menlo Park giant is trying to «flatten» the organizational structure, to literally repeat what Zuckerberg declared:

We’re investing in native AI tools so Meta employees can be more productive. We are valuing individual collaborators and flattening hierarchies within teams. If we do that, I think we’ll get much better results, and I think it’ll be a lot more fun, too.

The direction of Meta

The revelation made by Wall Street Journal it doesn’t come like a bolt from the blue, if we consider the “moves” made by Meta in the last period. Just think of the recent acquisition of Moltbook, an experimental platform similar to an online forum, but designed to allow agents to converse with each other. This type of environment simulates a digital ecosystem in which software does not simply respond to human beings, but develops autonomous dynamics and interacts with each other. The system is based on OpenClaw, an open-source tool, i.e. with publicly accessible code, which can run directly on user devices and manage operational tasks such as email, scheduling and application development.

Another example. To speed up various business processes, Meta has been making use of “Second Brain” for some time, a system that allows you to index and query project documents, and personal assistants for employees such as “My Claw”, capable of accessing work files and conversations, as well as interacting with colleagues or other AI agents.

Security fears

Agent autonomy excites some and, rightly, scares many others. Several cybersecurity experts have expressed concerns about tools like OpenClaw. Concerns justified by the fact that these tools can access critical functions of devices. When software has the ability to read emails and calendars, the attack surface for cybercriminals is potentially greater. For example, using the technique of prompt injectiona security vulnerability in which malicious input manipulates a language model (LLM) to ignore the developer’s original instructions, executing unexpected commands or revealing sensitive data, could allow criminal collectives to access critical data and information.

It is no coincidence that institutional bodies have also reported possible risks linked to these technologies, highlighting the need for more rigorous controls. It remains to be understood what countermeasures Meta will adopt to manage these risks, in a context in which the autonomy of agents is growing faster than security guarantees.
