Serious accident at LaGuardia airport in New York, USA: the company’s plane Air Canada collided with a V truckigils of Fire during the landing phase.
According to what was reported by Reuters, the plane, an Air Canada Express CRJ-900, had departed from Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau airport and was carrying 72 passengers and 4 crew members: after the accident – which occurred on runway 4 around 11.47pm yesterday 22 March (local time, 04.47am in Italy) – the New York regulatory authority ordered the closure of the airport until 7pm today March 23 (Italian time), with 18 flights canceled or diverted to other airports.
Due to the impact, the two pilots unfortunately lost their lives, while 41 people were injured (of which 32 have already been discharged from hospital), including the police officers driving the emergency vehicle, which was proceeding at high speed to manage another emergency. In particular, it seems that the vehicle was responding to a problem involving a United Airlines flight, on board which there was an unpleasant odor.
According to information recorded by Flightradar24, flight 8646 (operated by Jazz Aviation LP on behalf of Air Canada) would have hit the Fire Brigade vehicle at a speed of approximately 39 km/h: as also visible in the images shown in the post below, following the collision the nose of the plane was destroyed, while during the emergency evacuation the aircraft lost its attitude and the tail hit the ground.
At the moment the causes of the accident have not yet been clarified: in the meantime, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has also issued a ground block order for the airport, confirming the launch of an investigation to clarify the dynamics.
According to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, LaGuardia Airport served more than 30 million passengers in 2025, with a wide range of U.S. airlines operating at the airport.
