Beyond 23 million euros Collected in one year thanks to speed cameras only in a portion of Salento. More than 2 million on the streets of the Pontine coast. Hundreds of thousands of euros even earned by tiny common mountains, such as Colle Santa Lucia, which has just over 350 inhabitants.
These are the numbers, surprising, released by Assoutenti in a press release of May 4, 2025.
Speed Speed, how much do they really yield? Which municipalities with major takings
According to Assoutenti, the Salento territory has generated over 23 million in speed camera penalties, making the area one of the more “profitable” in Italy on the electronic checks front at speed.
Punta tourist destination during the summer season, just think that in 2023 only four municipalities – Galatina, Trepuzzi, Cavallino and Melpignano – have collected 8.7 million euros in fines for excess speed. The Municipality of Galatina has exceeded 4.7 millionthe. TO Trepuzzi The million and a halfWhile Cavallino and Melpignano they are respectively to 1.2 million and almost 900 thousand euros.
Also on the state road 372 Telesina, which connects Caianello to Benevento, the Municipalities have found a recurring source of revenue in the speed cameras. Only municipalities of Puglianello, Castelvenere and Torrecusoknown for the massive presence of detectors, collected in 2023 further 2.3 million euros.
And it does not go differently along the coast of southern Lazio, on the SS213 “Flacca”: a Terracina, Formia and Gaetaelectronic devices brought to the municipal coffers respectively 2.1 million, half a million and 365 thousand euros.
But perhaps the most sensational data comes from the heart of the Dolomites: the tiny common of Colle Santa Lucia (BL)with just 356 residents, he collected 1,265,822 euros from 2021 to 2023 thanks to a single speed camera. An average of beyond 420 thousand euros per yearor 3,616 euros per resident inhabitant. A fact that highlights an evident disproportion between the size of the Municipality and the scope of the collections.
Summer 2025, what to expect
These record collections, however, risk suffering a setback starting from summer 2025. As Assoutenti explains, in fact, many roads could “remain orphaned” of the speed cameras due to one failure to regulate definitive on the homologation of appliances.
Without certain rules, municipalities that use devices not approved in the Highway Code will be obliged to turn them offunder penalty of an avalanche of appeals by motorists. A situation that could generate a double effect: on the one hand the risk of less road safety, on the other a hole in the financial statements of the municipal administrations that had relying on those entrances.
As if that was not enough, the new rules introduced by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport will be definitively in force from 12 June, which they impose Fliese rules on installation speed cameras. The devices can no longer be placed at will, but only where there are the conditions provided for by the legislation, with the green light of the prefects and respecting minimal distances between the stations.
It will therefore be essential that the government and local authorities collaborate to guarantee the uniform application It is correct of the rules. And that citizens are put in a position to know in advance where and why the speed cameras are installed.
