OpenAI’s ChatGPT down, Gemini and Claude also don’t work: the problem could be with the TIM network

Since 4pm today, April 20, thousands of down reports have poured in for the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT, but malfunctions have also been recorded for Gemini and Claude. The portal Downdetector counted a peak of around 4000 reports of inability to use or access ChatGPT around 4.30pm, while for Gemini and Claude the numbers are much more contained with a peak of 84 reports and 107 reports respectively. The outages are receding (at the moment there are less than 1000 reports of ChatGPT downtime), with a sharp decline in the number of reports since 4.30pm. Users are complaining about lack of access to the platforms, slow or no responses, errors in loading conversations or interrupted sessions.

Given that the outages are occurring simultaneously for three different platforms, it can be hypothesized that the cause is upstream: since many reports come from the TIM fiber network (at the same time there were around 300 reports of malfunctioning of the provider’s broadband network), there could be a problem in the Flash Fiber infrastructure that provides the provider’s fiber connection. At the moment these are only hypotheses, as there have been no official communications yet.
