Salvini-Tajani crisis, 5 billion from the banks: “It is from Soviet Union”

The idea of the League on the Tax on Extraprofitti to the banks jumped by the chair Antonio Tajani. The balance in the government returns to be disregarded by the Plan of the Carroccio economic group to finance the next maneuver: ask for a contribution of 5 billion to the major credit institutions.

Proposal endorsed by Matteo Salvini, but sent back to the sender without if and without but on the other vice premier, who immediately made clear and without turns of words the unavailability of Forza Italia on this type of measure.

The League’s proposal

The temperature began to raise in the majority after the spread of the press release of the Economic Group of the League, in which, in view of the Budget Law, an intervention on the extraprofitti of large banking groups is assumed, taking 5 billion from banks to support families, craftsmen and businesses.

In recent days, the Minister of Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti had spoken of a “dutiful” contribution to the “tax relief” to ask the credit institutions, but by the MEF it was made to be known that the Treasury owner was not involved in the proposal made by the Carroccio, which therefore remains a political initiative.

The Northern Economic Group referred in the note to the experiences of other European countries, where the tax on extraprofitable has already been caught “successfully”.

As reported by Republican example could be the Spanish tax, introduced in 2022 by the Sanchez government temporarily on the margins of interest and the commissions of the banks which in 2019 had invoiced more than 900 million, but extended last December until 2027.

The model initially provided for a 4.8% tax, with a rate that has become progressive starting from 1% for taxable income of up to 750 million, 3.5% up to 1.5 billion and 4.8% of up to 3 billion, reaching 6% of up to 5 billion and 7% above the 5 billion threshold.

Tajani’s “no”

The move of the League, however, immediately found the Forza Italia wall, with the Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani who has dryly rejected the proposal.

From the party festival in Telese Terme, the secretary also called into question Giorgia Meloni, remembering how the premier had spoken of “positive comparison with the banking system” only a few days ago, on the wake of the agreement reached last year on the 3.4 billion tax advance that the banks will verse until 2026, postponing the deductions on the different active taxes (DTA).

Tajani would be open to extending this solution, rejecting any reference to extraprofette without appeal:

Threatening extraprofitti is useless. As long as Forza Italia is in the government there will never be taxes on extraprofitti. I want to say this very clearly. In fact, the Prime Minister Meloni said ‘let’s discuss’ but the threat of taxes is unacceptable. I am absolutely against taxes on extra profits, it is stuff from the Soviet Union.

A dry “no” had come following Giorgetti’s solicitation also from the president of the Italian Banking Association Abi, Antonio Patuelli, who in a lectio at the Link University of Rome had clarified:

The banks have no position annuities
