Super rich in Italy, how many are there and who controls almost a fifth of the wealth

Wealth in Italy is increasingly concentrated in the hands of a small number of individuals. This is a figure that highlights one of the main economic transformations of recent years: while the country’s overall assets continue to grow, an increasingly significant part of the financial assets is concentrated in the highest segments of the population.

How many are the super rich in Italy

According to the latest Global Wealth Report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG), in 2025 just 3,100 super-rich Italians, with assets exceeding 100 million dollars, control 18.6% of national financial wealth, a share destined to increase to 22.2% by 2030. Alone, these people hold almost a fifth of the country’s entire financial wealth.

The BCG report defines ultra high net worth individuals (Ultra HNW) those who possess financial assets exceeding 100 million dollars.

How wealth is distributed

As emerged from the data:

  • the largest portion of the population belongs to the so-called “mass” clientele, i.e. those with assets of less than $250,000. These are approximately 47.9 million individuals, who together concentrate 37.6% of total financial wealth;
  • Going up the level we find the affluent, with assets between 250,000 and one million dollars, which represent 12.1% of national wealth;
  • the band of lower high net worthmade up of individuals with assets between 1 and 20 million dollars, controls 22.4% of Italian financial wealth;
  • then there are the upper high net worthapproximately 18,000 people with assets between 20 and 100 million dollars, who hold 9.3% of national wealth;
  • finally, the ones already mentioned ultra high net worthwhich despite being only 3,100 individuals, come to possess 18.6% of the entire Italian financial wealth, a share that could exceed 22% by the end of the decade.

How much the heritage of Italians has grown

The phenomenon of the concentration of wealth is part of a context of general growth of the national heritage. In 2025, in fact, the overall financial wealth of Italians reached 7,500 billion dollars, recording an increase of 17.4% compared to 2024.

Forecasts indicate that by 2030 this value could reach 9,800 billion dollars, with an average annual growth of 5.4%.

If we also consider real assets, such as real estate and other assets, estimated at 8,700 billion dollars, and subtract liabilities, equal to approximately 900 billion, the total net worth of Italians reaches 15,300 billion dollars.

Because the concentration of wealth increases

According to experts, several factors contribute to the growing concentration of wealth. On the one hand, large financial investments benefit more from the growth of markets and the opportunities offered by global finance. On the other hand, the ability to diversify investments and access sophisticated financial instruments allows large assets to grow more rapidly than small-medium assets.

Added to this is the phenomenon of the generational transfer of wealth, which in the coming years will affect a significant share of large Italian family fortunes, contributing to maintaining a high concentration of economic resources.

Data on global wealth

Another interesting fact that emerged from the report is that despite 2025 being characterized by a complex international context – marked by geopolitical tensions, trade wars and financial market volatility – global financial wealth grew by 10.7%, reaching the record value of 333,000 billion dollars and marking the best result since 2021.

In recent years, Hong Kong has overtaken Switzerland as the world’s leading cross-border financial center. In fact, Hong Kong manages approximately 2,900 billion dollars of international assets, with a growth of 10.7% compared to the previous year. Overall, the top ten financial centers on the planet intercept almost 90% of new cross-border wealth flows, which have reached 15,700 billion dollars, an increase of 8.4%.
