Those who keep money in their current account usually earn nothing: the balance does not produce interest and indeed inflation erodes its value. This is why deposit accounts are back in fashion, instruments that pay interest to those who agree to leave the money blocked for a certain period. Poste Italiane has relaunched one with a timed offer: the Supersmart Premium Deposit it promises a 3.25% gross annual rate, but to join you must pay the money by 9 July 2026. The window to join is therefore just a few days.
What is the Supersmart Premium Deposit
The Supersmart Deposit is a function of the Libretto Smart, the digital version of Poste Italiane’s postal savings book guaranteed by the State through Cassa Depositi e Prestiti.
In practice, those who have a Smart Booklet can set aside part of the sums deposited, i.e. block them for a pre-established period, in exchange for higher interest.
The Supersmart Premium Deposit it is a temporary offer: by tying up the money for 366 days (one year and one day), Poste recognizes a rate of 3.25% gross per year. The sums left free in the passbook, however, remain remunerated at the base rate, i.e. the ordinary interest on the passbook, fixed at a symbolic 0.001%.
How much does it really make, between gross and net
3.25% is a gross rate, calculated before taxes.
A withholding tax of 26% is applied to the interest, to which is added the stamp duty of 0.20% per year on the sums deposited.
For the actual yield on a precise figure, it is best to use the official Post Office simulator, but let’s take an example:
By tying 10,000 euros for 366 days, the net interest at maturity is 241.16 euros, equal to approximately 2.41%.
What is meant by new liquidity
The offer is not valid for the money already present in the booklet, but only for the so-called new liquidity. The sums paid starting from 15 May 2026 and by 9 July 2026 count.
Money can arrive in the Smart Booklet in three ways:
- with a bank transfer;
- by paying bank checks or bank drafts;
- by crediting your salary or pension.
Anyone who has sums in another postal passbook or in a BancoPosta account can move them to the Smart Libretto with a girofondo, i.e. an internal transfer between products of the same owner, always by 9 July. After that date, or if Poste closes the offer first, the Supersmart Premium Deposit it can no longer be activated.
How much money do you need to pay to get started
500 euros are enough to activate the restriction, which can be increased by 50 euros at a time, up to a maximum of 3 million.
You must be of age and have a Smart bookletalone or jointly.
Activation can be done:
- from the Post Office website;
- from the Post Office app;
- from a post office counter.
Those who do not have the Smart Booklet must first open one, through a free operation which is also possible online.
What happens if you withdraw the money early
The 3.25% is guaranteed only if the money remains tied up until the 366 days expire.
However, you can withdraw at any time, even only in part (minimum 50 euros), immediately regaining the availability of the sums. The part withdrawn early, however, loses the advantageous rate and is paid only at the base rate of 0.001%.
Any portion left to maturity, however, continues to yield 3.25%.
