Tajani in the open clash in the majority

Sparks between government allies over taxes for homeowners. Antonio Tajani thunders about the hypothesis of an increase in the dry tax rate for short-term rentals, warning the other majority parties that Forza Italia will never vote in favor of this measure included in the draft Budget 2026.

The Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister denounced the unannounced appearance of the law in the latest draft of the Budget law, which risks adding an additional flaw in addition to the rift with the League over the contribution to the banks.

The increase in the tax for short-term rentals

Added to the reasons for conflict in the majority on the 2026 Budget law was the increase in taxation of short-term rentals, both for private individuals and for those who carry out real estate brokerage activities or manage online portals.

In fact, among the 137 articles of the latest version of the Maneuver, the cancellation of the reduction to 21% of the dry tax rate established last year on the first house for tourist use would be foreseen: the tax would thus rise again to 26%.

An increase which, according to estimates by Aigab (a trade association representing over 800 operators) would lead to an extra 1,300 euros on the average contract for a house in the semi-suburbs.

According to the president of the association, Marco Celani, the scenario that would arise with the increase in the rate would see a sharp increase in rents and also in illegal rents, as well as a decrease in the number of rentals.

Tajani’s stop

The secretary of Forza Italia bluntly expressed his party’s opposition to the measure, underlining that it had never been discussed in the majority.

We will do everything to ensure that the text is changed. Either it is modified before sending it to the Accounting Office or it is done in Parliament

In his speech at the opening of the conference on the general states of the house, Antonio Tajani assured that he would speak about the law with the Minister of Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti, promising battle:

For us, home and law enforcement are the priority. I don’t see why there should be one attitude towards cryptocurrencies and another towards homeowners. Let’s talk about it. We are three political forces, we don’t want to decide for others but we don’t want others to decide for us either.

Forza Italia’s position on short-term rentals is also shared by the League, with which tension remains high over the proposed levy on banks’ extra profits.

In the push and pull with his ally, Matteo Salvini raised the contribution to be requested from the major credit institutions up to six or even seven billion, provoking the Azzurri.

While waiting for the maneuver to land in the Senate, the Mef is still working on adjustments to the text and Tajani is, however, confident in an opening on negotiations with the Northern League.
