Train accident in Denmark, head-on collision between two trains in Kagerup: several injured

In Denmark there was a train accident this morning, Thursday 23 April 2026: according to what was reported by the local authorities cited by Reuterstwo commuter trains collided head-on, causing at least 17 injuries, including 4 in critical condition.

The collision occurred around 6.30 am – as confirmed by the emergency services spokesperson – near Kagerup, a town located about 40 km north of Copenhagen, on the Gribskovbanen railway line that connects the city of Hillerød to Gilleleje.

According to initial reconstructions, the two convoys collided head-on along the line, although the trains remained on the tracks without overturning, as the images also demonstrate: the head of the rescue operations, Martin Schmidt, described the impact as “violent”, while the local police classified the accident as “serious”.

The total number of injured is still being verified: preliminary police reports indicate between five and ten people involved. All passengers, however, were safely evacuated and no one was trapped on board.

Investigations are currently underway to ascertain the causes of the accident: police, firefighters, rescue teams and, given the seriousness of the situation, even military helicopters intervened on site. The roads in the area were closed to traffic and rail traffic on the line was suspended.

Train accidents don’t happen often in Denmark: the last serious one dates back to 2019, when the collision of a passenger train caused eight deaths and 16 injuries. In Europe, however, numerous accidents, including particularly serious ones, are being recorded in 2026: among these, the derailment of two high-speed trains in Spain, which caused at least 45 deaths.
