Two products recalled due to food risk: what is ochratoxin

Flour recall: risk of ochratoxin intake

With the notes of the July 12th and 17th the Ministry of Health (also present on thededicated app) has decided to recall two potentially dangerous products. These are a flour and a type of taralli.

The flour is of the brand “Fruit’s Better”. The name of the sales denomination is precisely pistachio flour. The manufacturer and the establishment identification mark is Mocerino Dried Fruit srlthe address of the factory is: via Piazzone n.5-80049 in Somma Vesuviana (NA). The alarm was raised by presence of ochratoxin in a value higher than that foreseen by EU regulation 2023/915. The recall, foreseen from 17 July 2024 regarding products with expiry dates 31/03/2025 and 04/11/2025, has a warning. The note states that the products “can cause gastrointestinal disorders due to the ingestion of food contaminated by high concentrations of OTA”.

Ochratoxin (also present in quinoa) is a mycotoxin, a toxin produced by some species of fungi. The main fungal species responsible for the production of ochratoxin are Aspergillus genus and the genus Penicillium. The most common is ochratoxin A (OTA), which is considered the most toxic and studied of the ochratoxins. Its intake causes several problems, including risks to the nervous system and increases the risk of cancer.

Taralli recall: risk of gluten contamination

The Ministry of Health has also decided to recall a type of taralli.

The taralli are of the brand “Gluten”. The name of the sales denomination is precisely Oatmeal taralli. The manufacturer and the establishment identification mark is Nine Alps Ltd.the address of the factory is: via Van Gogh n.25 in Coversano (BA). To better identify the packages under recall, you can therefore check the number of the accused batch:

The alarm was triggered by the presence of gluten in a product declared as “specifically formulated for people intolerant to gluten”. The recall, scheduled for July 12, 2024 regarding the product with an expiration date of 03/03/2025, has a warning. The note states that the product “must not be consumed by people with celiac disease and sensitive to the allergen gluten and returned to the point of sale”.

The risk ranges from gastrointestinal to neurological symptoms.
