which regions give more

THE’8xmille It represents a tool through which Italian taxpayers can allocate an IRPEF share to religious bodies or the state for social purposes. Every year, millions of citizens make this choice during the tax return. The most recent data, referring to the provision of 2025 and relating to income 2021, provide a detailed overview of both the preferences of taxpayers and the regional distribution of choices.

To whom 8xmille goes: an overview of the beneficiaries

In 2025, out of a total of beyond 41 million taxpayersmore than 16.6 million have expressed a valid choice for the destination of the 8xmille, while over 24.5 million did not express preferences. The most chosen options were:

  • Catholic Church, with over 11.5 million preferences;
  • State, with over 4.1 million choices;
  • Union of Christian churches of the 7th day, with about 20,600 choices.

Next to these, other recognized religious bodies have collected thousands of adhesions including the Valdese Evangelical Churchthe assemblies of God, the union of the Italian Jewish communities and the Lutheran Evangelical Church.

The distribution of choices highlights a strong prevalence of the Catholic Church But significant territorial differences also emerge between regions and autonomous provinces linked to the historical and cultural presence of the various religious confessions.

In particular, the Valdese Evangelical Church, while representing a small religious minority at national level, manages to collect a significant number of signatures thanks also to a strong presence in Piedmont and in some urban areas of the Center-North. The union of the Christian churches of the 7th day confirms stable support throughout the territory especially in some provinces of Tuscany and Emilia Romagna.

The destination of 8XMille is then concretely used for humanitarian, cultural, educational and welfare projects. For example, the Catholic Church uses funds to support canteens, reception centers, parishes and missionary works. The other confessions, such as the Valdese Church, also invest in what was received in projects of solidarity, international cooperation, civil rights and secularism.

The regions with the most marked preferences

Analyzing the data regionalsome interesting curiosities emerge regarding the choices for 8xmille:

  • In Piedmont, the Valdese Evangelical Church receives over 104,000 preferences, a figure clearly higher than that recorded in other regions, confirming a historical and cultural link with the territory;
  • In Lombardy, the Catholic Church collects more than 2.2 million choices, resulting in the region with the greatest absolute number of preferences for this confession;
  • In Sicily, over 958,000 taxpayers choose the Catholic Church, but also stand out more than 10,000 preferences for the Valdese Evangelical Church, a sign of growing roots also in South Regions;
  • In Trentino-Alto Adige, the share relating to the state exceeds 110,000 preferences, distributed almost equally between the two autonomous provinces;

Other interesting data emerge in Liguriawhere the Valdese Evangelical Church collects over 22,000 signatures, and in the regions of the center, such as Tuscany and Marche, where the distribution of choices shows greater diversification between entities.

The religious choices of Italians on a regional basis
