Barcolana 58 in Trieste: the program and how the largest sailing regatta in the world works

On 11 October 2026, the Gulf of Trieste will become the stage for the 58th edition of the Barcolana, the sailing regatta with the most participants in the world. Its peculiarity lies in an almost unique form: on the same starting line, professionals and simple enthusiasts compete side by side on banks of all sizes divided into categories based on the total length from hull to bow. Born in the Barcola district and traditionally held on the second Sunday of October, the race represents the highlight of ten days of major events on land and at sea. The start is set for 10.30 on a 13 nautical mile course, with a fleet of over 1,750 boats ready to deal with the real director of the competition: the wind. Making it even more special is the arrival of the Amerigo Vespucci training ship for the final stage of its 2026 world tour.

How the race and the quadrilateral route works

The route of the race on Sunday 11 October 2026 at 10.30 am is a quadrilateral with fixed vertices traced in the Gulf of Trieste, for a total of 13 nautical miles. The starting line is positioned between the coast of Barcola (buoy P) and the Castello di Miramare (buoy P1); the boats must round four buoys, leaving them on the starboard side, to then face the last stretch off the Faro della Vittoria and finish at the finish line in front of the Diga Vecchia, in the body of water in front of Piazza Unità d’Italia.

From a practical point of view, the starting procedure starts at 10.20 (ten minutes before the official start at 10.30) with the first acoustic signal and the display of the “E” flag. The fleet must remain outside the line until the shot: whoever passes it before the time is forced to return by going around the lateral extensions of the competition field. To complete the regatta you have until the mandatory deadline of 5.30pm.

However, the true director of the Gulf will decide the fate of the competition: the Bora. Its unpredictable gusts transform the course into a high-tension tactical challenge, where knowing how to manage the set-up counts more than pure speed. Proof of this is the 2021 edition, when gusts over 40 knots forced the organizers to shorten the route to ensure the safety of the crews.

The best panoramic points to watch the 2026 international sailing regatta

The shape of the Gulf transforms Trieste into a sort of “natural stadium” of sailing: you can follow the race from many points even while staying on land. Here are three strategic locations:

  • Vittoria Lighthouse and Strada del Friuli: position indicated to observe the fleet alignment phase and the start.

  • Napoleonic Road and Sanctuary of Monte Grisa: the 3.7 km route between Prosecco and the Opicina Obelisk offers a panoramic view from above over the entire race field.

  • Barcola seafront and Rive (Molo Audace and Piazza Unità d’Italia: observation points at sea level, close to the Village and services. To closely follow the steps to the first mark and the finish line.

The history of the race and what you win: from 51 sailing boats to the Guinness Book of Records

In 1969, the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano (SVBG), a club founded a few months earlier, organized a regatta open to all boats in the Gulf: the Autumn Cup, designed to close the sailing season. “Do you have a sailboat? So you can participate”, this was the spirit.

During the first edition the start is given with a red rag and 51 boats show up at the start, all from clubs in the city. To win is Betelgeusehelmed by Piero Napp. But how did it go from a few dozen pioneers to a worldwide phenomenon? The turning point came in the 1980s, when the economic boom also affected the sailing sector and the regatta began to attract owners and crews from all over the world. The first foreign victory came in 1980 in favor of the German boat “Rupe” owned by German Rudolf Hoffmeister. The numbers exploded in the 2000s: in 2017 2,101 boats participated and on 14 October 2018, during the 50th edition, 2,689 boats with over 16,000 sailors registered. This figure earned it entry into the Guinness World Record as “the largest sailing regatta in the world”. The 2025 edition saw 1,865 participants at the start and the third consecutive triumph of Furio Benussi’s Arca Sgr (Yacht Club Adriaco).

How many will be at the start this year? The counting ends close to the regatta. As of today, Friday 9 October, registrations (open until Saturday) have almost reached the quota of 1800 boats. These numerous participants will be placed in the various rankings based on the order of arrival to determine the awarding of special prizes and trophies. In addition to the Barcolana Trophy reserved for the overall winner, there are targeted prizes such as the Generali – Women in Sailing Trophy for the first mixed crew led by a skipper, the Fulvio Molinari Trophy for the best “Old Sailor” with at least 20 editions under her belt and the FIV Challenge Trophy for the boat arriving from the furthest port. Cups will also be awarded to the top three finishers in each Category and Cruise class.
