The president of Stellantis, John Elkann, spoke in the hearing in Parliament to exhibit the Development and consolidation plans of the group after the farewell of CEO Carlos Tavares. For the president, Italy plays a central role for society. For this reason, for the current year and for the next, they are planned investments important. This aspect shows, for John Elkann, “the importance of the link with the Italian chain”.
However, it still remains to be understood what the future of factories Stellantis in the country. On the theme, the president of the automotive group has ensured that the factories will be enhanced, to allow them “maximum flexibility to be able to produce the largest range of Stellantis models and satisfy customers both in terms of product and engines”. All, of course, with attention to the electric market and taking into account the strong competition of China.
The Stellantis plan in Italy
John Elkann, to describe the star of Stellantis, first recalled the path taken by the company over the years. In Parliament he also remarked investments for the current year – not easy for the group – and for the following ones.
For the current year we are spending about 2 billion euros of investments and 6 billion euros in purchases from Italian suppliers. Since its birth in January 2021, Stellantis has purchased services and components from the Italian car supply chain for a value of 24 billion euroswhich will become 30 at the end of 2025.
With a future perspective, the role of duties on cars and the evolution of the electric sector will be central. Factors, these, which will also affect the factories Italian. Elkann claimed the commitment made by the group for Italy, underlining that, in the face of a 30%domestic market, the occupation dropped by 20%.
Our Italian factories are and will be equipped with all the multi-energy platforms of Stellantis for the production of cars: Stla Small, Medium and Large, with the latter two already operational a Melfi And Cassino. Also, ad Atess A platform dedicated to light commercial vehicles is installed. These investments will allow Italian establishments to be maximum flexibility to be able to produce the wider range of Stellantis models and satisfy customers both in terms of product and engines. TO Pomigliano Until 2030 the current production of the hybrid panda (La Pandina) has been extended, followed by the new generation of the same model.
Electric, between costs and competition with China
A critical aspect of the next years of Stellantis, as well as the entire automotive sector, will be represented by the production of electric vehicles. As is known, this has still very high costs for European countries, including Italy. As pointed out by Elkann, the sun batteries represent the 45% of the cost total car, with the gigafactory that are mostly located in China (214 against 13 European Championships). A very large margin asian, to recover which the president of Stellantis requires more interventions to Europe. They need to go in the direction already undertake to modify the CO2 emission regulation.
The World motor vehicle market has about 80 million units sold in 2024. The China occupies the first place with 30 million, followed by States United (16 million) and fromEuropean Union (15 million). Compared to 20 years ago, sales in China exploded (+400%), in the USA 5%slightly decreased, while in Europe they fell 12%and in Italy they fell by 30%. If today in Europe and Italy less cars are produced, it is a consequence of the market contraction of the last 20 years. Similarly, the increase in production in Europe and in Italy in the next twenty years will depend on the growth of the market, which will be increasingly electric.
The impact of Stellantis on the Italian economy
In support of his words, John Elkann provided the details of the independent study, conducted by the Luiss Guido Carli University, to analyze the contribution given to the Italian economy from 2004 to 2023 by the Stellantis group.
The total production of cars and commercial vehicles was 16.7 million, for an overall value of the national production of almost 700 billion euros. The added value for the entire national supply chain and for the consumption of families was 417 billion, which wants that “for every euro of value created by Stellantis, 9 are generated in the rest of the economy”.
And again, over the past 20 years:
- The company paid 14 billion taxes to the tax authorities that rise to 32 billion if you take into account the revenue linked to VAT and the taxes paid on behalf of the employees;
- Investments and research and development in Italy were 53 billion.
I hope that from today the budget give/have between the country and the company is no longer a divisive theme, but an opportunity to continue this virtuous path together that has lasted for 125 years, proudly with Italy.
