Cannabis for therapeutic use enters the list of narcotics: what changes

First steps of the government’s crackdown on the cannabis. After the amendment to the law on security that wants to make light hemp illegal, the transfer of cannabis derivatives for therapeutic use also arrives in Table B of narcotic substances. A choice that will restrict the possibility of their sale and distribution.

Products based on cannabidiol therefore, used mainly for the treatment of chronic pain, anxiety and insomnia, from now on they can only be purchased in pharmacies. Furthermore, advertising will be completely prohibited, as happens for other products considered narcotics derived from plants and dedicated to the treatment of certain pathologies.

Cannabis among narcotics: what changes for medicines

The Meloni government has published in Official Journal a ministerial decree for the “Updating of the tables containing the indication of narcotic and psychotropic substances”. The consolidated text on narcotics, which regulates the criminal and civil norms regarding the use, consumption and sale of certain substances, contains in fact various tables in which the substances themselves are inserted and which then, with various references within the law, create the categories in which drugs and other psychotropic substances are distinguished.

The main novelty of this update is the transfer of the compositions for oral administration of cannibidiol, obtained from cannabis, in Schedule B. This identifies them as narcotic substances from the plant world. The move in schedule has a cascading effect on a series of laws that determine the role of the substance within the legislative system.

This will result in some changes to the way these drugs can be used and sold. These are mainly compounds that exploit some of the analgesic properties of cannabidiol, which does not have psychotropic effects unlike the other active ingredient in cannabis, THC. From now on, obtaining these products will require a medical prescription and their sale will be authorised only in pharmacy

Government’s crackdown on cannabis

This is not the first restrictive move that the government has made Melons tried to push forward against cannabis. During the discussion of the bill on security, in fact, the League proposed an amendment to make light cannabis illegal. The law currently in force, in fact, supported by numerous rulings of the Court of Cassation, allows the sale of products containing cannabis with a content of THC extremely low, with virtually no significant psychotropic effects.

Over the years this possibility has given rise to an entire production chainwhich often finds itself having to deal with the uncertainties of the law, a fact that has in turn produced numerous sentences of the Court of Cassation that have certified the legality of these activities. It is not only about distribution shops but also about agricultural companies that grow the raw material.

Representatives of companies in the sector have protested in recent weeks against the government’s intentions, which according to data collected by them themselves would endanger a supply chain hundreds of small and medium-sized businesses and thousands of workers across the country.
