China imposes duties 75% on plastic, the impact on Italy and the EU

There China has announced that it will impose duties between 3.8 and 74.9% on the import of polyoximethylenea type of plastic also known as Polyformaldehyde or with the abbreviation Pom. It is a very resistant and low -cost material, which is used in very different areas, from medical equipment to cars.

The duties will hit the United States, the European Union, Japan and Taiwan, and have arrived after an analysis anti -dumping of the Beijing authorities. A move that goes into the opposite direction to China’s recent ease of duties towards the USA.

The new Chinese duties

The new Chinese duties do not seem to be caused by the behaviors of other countries. In fact, they arrive after an analysis that would have established that the companies of the affected states would implement a known practice as dumping. It is the low -price export, even at the cost of going at loss, a specific goods, to prevent the development of competition in a specific country or region.

A practice of which China has been accused several times by the United States, as regards the electric cars market, and from Europe, as regards the wind turbines and photovoltaic panels. The duties on Pump They could therefore be aimed at building a Chinese internal chain for the production of this type of polymer.

The impact on Italy and Europe

In Italy there are mainly three realities that deal with the production of Pom. It is Group rootsYes Sirmax Group and of Sides Thermoplastic industry. However, all these companies have a wide range of plastic products in their price lists. The duties on China’s polyformaldehyde will surely impact sales, but they probably will not determine serious difficulties for the near future.

In the same way, the European exports of this specific material do not exceed billion euroseven if the data date back to 2021. The impact of Chinese duties therefore should not be particularly felt by the EU companies, which can still refer to an internal market that matters almost the same amount of Pom that the continent exports.

Data that underline again how China’s move is not aimed at damaging a specific country, as instead the American ones of the last few months, but to protect an ‘internal industry in development.

The reduction of US duties continues

In the meantime, the United States are continuing to dismantle the duty plant erected in recent months. The US are continuing to deal with the China After giving in to Beijing’s requests and suspended all the “mutual” duties imposed on the country.

Steps forward for the normalization of relationships also with the Canada. During the meeting in Rome between the Canadian premier Mark Carryy and the American vice president JD Vance, Ottawa decided to reduce some retaliation duties imposed on the United States.
