Having the electric car is easier, they increase charging columns

Support for electric cars continues to grow. In Italy, after years of difficulty, the charging network begins to be truly widespread and useful to owners of electric vehicles. On the highway, the charging points are over 1,000, while throughout Italy you get to exceed 65 thousand columns.

Only in recent months, the charging infrastructures have risen by over 10 thousand units and according to operators the electricity grid continues to expand. However, there are critical issues: the South and the road network. This also translates into a low diffusion, compared to the rest of Europe, electric vehicles.

Increase the electricity network for cars: numbers

The numbers of the network for electric cars are increasing. The latest report by Motus-E, the reference association for electric mobility, confirms the positive trend and the enormous improvement compared to last year.

The document turns out that 67,561 electric charging points are installed throughout Italy and 1,159 points on the highway (45% of the service areas are provided). This is a step forward compared to previous data. The numbers tell an increasing commitment of the operators.

Other positive data, which can really push towards a transition to the electric car for thousands of motorists, are:

  • Over the past 12 months, charging points have increased by 10,569 units;
  • In the second quarter of the year, 1,569 units increased;
  • 1,159 are the charging points on the highway (49 in the activation phase);
  • 85% of the columns are fast charging;
  • 62% exceeds 150 kW of power.

The regions with multiple charging points

As on many other themes, the South remains less involved in modernizations. Italy, also on electricity, travels at two speeds. The regions with multiple charging points are:

  • Lombardy with 13,763 charging points, +2,861 in the last 12 months;
  • Lazio with 7,142 points, +1,501 in the 12 months;
  • Piedmont with 6,561 points, +786 in the 12 months;
  • Veneto with 6,176 points, +668 in the 12 months;
  • Emilia-Romagna with 5,282, +562 in the 12 months.

Among the provinces, however:

  • Rome in the first place with 5,644 points installed, +1,193 in the 12 months;
  • Milan with 4,604 points, +986 in the 12 months;
  • Naples with 3,092 points, +253 in the 12 months;
  • Turin with 2,963 points, +322 in the 12 months;
  • Brescia with 1,892 points, +211 in the 12 months.

The weak points of the Italian electricity grid

It improves, but it is not yet perfect and the data relating to the number of electric cars in the country tell us. In fact, compared to the rest of Europe, Italy is the ultimate for enrollment of Full Electric models with 5.2% of the shares in the first half of the year. It is an uphill figure, but still equal to about a third of the EU average.

Among the reasons there is the price, a deficiency of incentives, but also an electrical network not yet convincing. Two critical points: the South and the viability. The highways are also covered only in half, there are in fact areas not covered like the A24, which has only low power points.

In any case, if there was an increase in registrations, the electricity grid may not be able to support all circulating vehicles. It is therefore a challenge: first the columns, then carry motorists to the electric. There is a need for mutual trust.
