The West Nile virus has become yet another stress factor for people, especially in Lazio. The numbers grow, however slow, without creating alarmism in the medical and scientific community. Instead, among the population, the fear of being infected and looking for various ways to avoid being points from the nile fever carrier.
The retailers specialized in mosquito nets are experiencing a hectic summer. Since the numbers of contagions and deaths are told in the newspapers, their switchboards have not stopped playing. Just in Lazio, some companies speak of a doubling of the installation requests for mosquito nets. In some cases, moreover, there are customers with special requests, which demonstrate the agitation around the diffusion of the West Nile.
Mosquito nets for all: +50% of quotes
10 deaths since the beginning of the year, 4 only in Lazio and the concern from West Nile has served. Dealers, specialized centers and installers have told of an important increase in calls, emails and mosquito nets throughout the region.
Marco Marcantoni, sales manager of Sharknet Companyexplains that compared to last year the share of quotes has increased by about +50% only in Lazio. Other companies in the area have declared the same and also very specific requests arrive.
It is clear that the concern is growing around the vector of the virus that causes the Nile fever, also because of the requests that come to the specialists. Some customers ask if the mosquito net is approved For the Culex mosquito, others if there is a sort of “anti-virus filter”.
Ordinance of the Lazio Region: 1 million for disinfestation
At this point, each municipality should have already started the extraordinary disinfestation procedures, but it did not go like this everywhere. The president of the Lazio Region, Francesco Rocca, has therefore signed an urgent order to prevent the spread of the West Nile virus and allow the defaulting municipalities to comply. In fact, in addition to the mosquito nets of which there is also a bonus for installation, it is necessary to implement disinfestation plans throughout the territory.
The ordinance reads that the interventions must be “urgent and without delay” as indicated by the local health companies. To allow it, the Region financed the disinfestation with extraordinary economic resources with a special resolution of the junta.
The President of the Region therefore declared the allocation of one million euros for defaulting municipalities. “So no one will have any more alibis – he says, but he adds – but I repeat, no alarmism. As I have already said, it is not Covid”.
Contagions in the provinces increase
In the meantime, however, contagions increase. In Lazio there are:
- 15 new positives, almost all of the province of Latina;
- a total of 61 infected people;
- 30 out of 61 present symptoms;
- 19 cases have been hospitalized in ordinary departments;
- 6 people have been discharged;
- 3 are in intensive care.
However, the numbers are not necessarily negative. As Francesco Vairo, director of the regional service for epidemiology, surveillance and control of infectious diseases (Seresmes) -spallanzani explains, these indicate the effectiveness of the regional surveillance network and the raising awareness of general doctors.
The greater the patients who recognize the symptoms and who undergo controls, the greater the opportunities to keep them monitored and safe. In particular, this applies to the so -called “fragile” and the elderly people.
