Musk’s new idea

Tesla expands its range of action and aims to enter the market for the supply of electricity by aiming for an epochal turning point. The company led by Elon Musk has already started without delay. Known mainly for the production of electric cars, he asked the application for the Energy Regulatory Authority of the United Kingdom, Ofgem, to start the distribution of electricity to houses and companies in England, Scotland and Wales as early as next year.

The move arrives in a moment of renewal for the company that recorded a drop in turnover and useful and with a slight percentage of global flexion sales. In addition, there was also a discount at the end of July of the stock exchange title.

Tesla how it can become a producer of energy

The request submitted by Tesla to Ofgem is already dated July 18, given that it shows a long planning towards this entrepreneurial turning point. Andrew Payne’s signature, energy director for Europe, represents a concrete step towards the diversification of the business.

The company had already obtained a license in 2020 to produce electricity in the United Kingdom through solar panels, but without the possibility of selling it directly to consumers. Now the goal is to become a direct supplier, thus supporting activities in the automotive sector with a new branch linked to the energy distribution.

The previous attempts

Tesla is not new to similar initiatives, in Texas it is already active in the distribution of electricity and this project in the United Kingdom is part of a global expansion strategy in the energy sector. As the analyst Susannah Streeter by Hargreaves Lansdown points out, the company is “trying to diversify further” and to strengthen its presence in infrastructure and robotics.

The license obtained in 2020 to produce energy in the United Kingdom represents an important precedent. At the time, Tesla limited itself to production through its photovoltaic systems, without interacting directly with end customers. With the new question, however, it aims at an active role as a supplier, making its energy production and management network available for the domestic and corporate market.

The document presented to Ofgem, made known by the Sunday Telegraph, therefore marks a change of approach, from a simple manufacturer to operator capable of offering direct services to consumers. This evolution follows an already consolidated trend in the United States, where Tesla has started similar projects in some states, integrating accumulation and intelligent management technologies of energy.

Drops of turnover

The new project comes in a phase of reorganization for Tesla, constantly evolving. In the second quarter of 2025, the company recorded a net profit falling by 16% to 1.2 billion dollars, a result lower than the analysts’ forecasts. The turnover stood at $ 22.50 billion, marking a 12% contraction compared to the same period of the previous year.

Sales of electric cars decreased, thanks to the increase in competition and the controversies related to the involvement of Elon Musk in US policy. In the British market, enrollments went from 2,462 to July 2024 to 987 in the same month of 2025, highlighting a significant drop in demand. At the end of July, the Tesla title underwent a reduction in Wall Street, with a loss of 9.29% and a value of $ 301.60 per share. These data reflect a company, however healthy, which has encountered difficulties in maintaining constant growth in an increasingly competitive market.

In this scenario, diversification towards the supply of electricity represents a strategy to expand the sources of revenue and reduce dependence on vehicle sales. Entrance into the Energy Sector of the United Kingdom could therefore become a significant stage in the Tesla transformation path.
