A blue dot is about to make its appearance in the status bar of our Android smartphones and will represent the last piece inserted by Google to protect user privacy. This new visual icon aims to alert us in real time whenever an application installed on the device accesses our geographical location, whether the app is open on the screen, therefore in the foreground, or whether it is working in the background, i.e. silently while we do other things.
Initially introduced in the Android 16 QPR3 Beta 1 test version dedicated to Google Pixel phones, this function uses the same logic as the already well-known green indicator, used since 2021 to signal the use of the camera and microphone by one or more apps.
How Android’s blue dot works
The blue dot introduced with Android 16 QPR3 Beta 1 will light up in two distinct scenarios. The first is access to the location from a foreground app, i.e. when we actively use a navigation or maps app (or any other app that accesses geolocation services): in this case, access to the location is expected and aware. The second scenario is that of apps that access the location while running in the background: the app continues to collect data on our location even when we are not using it directly, a behavior that occurs completely invisible without a dedicated visual signal, such as the blue dot. And it represents a possible warning sign if the data is collected by an app that in theory has no benefit in knowing the location of the user who is using it (for example a “Calculator” app or an app that acts as a reader of PDF or e-Pub files).
Google engineers also thought about how to handle cases where multiple sensors are used at the same time. If an app were to access both the location and the microphone or camera at the same time, the display will not show two separate dots, to avoid crowding the interface too much. Instead, a single green indicator will appear, which is the color already associated with the activation of the camera and microphone, which will however signal the presence of multiple accesses in progress.
The real innovation, however, concerns the management menu associated with these indicators, which has been redesigned and renamed “Microphone, Camera and Position”. Through a pop-up accessible directly by touching the blue icon (or, depending on the case, the green one) in the status bar, we will have the possibility to instantly stop the activity of the app that is collecting the information, without having to navigate through the phone’s settings.
The availability of the new feature in 2027
The feature is currently only available to participants in the Android 16 QPR3 beta program on Pixel devices. The stable release is expected for the first months of 2027, after which, following the usual strategy of spreading Android updates, it is likely to be progressively adopted by all the main smartphone manufacturers.
