Shopping today costs 395 euros, it’s the fault of inflation

Inflation is stable on a general level. In July 2025, the national consumer price index for the entire community, gross of tobacco, recorded an increase of 0.4% on a monthly basis and 1.7% on an annual basis, in line with the data of the previous month.

But it is a stability that hides important variations in the different product sectors, confirming an articulated and far from uniform inflation. And consumer associations launch the alarm.

Holidays and food goods among the record increases

For the National Consumer Union (UNC), inflation equal to +1.7% means, for a couple with two children, an overall rise in the cost of living equal to 608 euros on an annual basis, of these 375 are only go to food products and soft drinks, and 395 for the shopping cart.

Increases that UNC defines as “unacceptable leaps”, above all considering that many take place in the middle of the summer season. Banking expenses (+4% monthly) and recreational services also record significant increases, making the management of the family budget more difficult.

The National Consumer Union (UNC) has drawn up the top ten of the monthly increases, elaborating the Istat data:

Inflation in Italy

By analyzing Istat data compared to June, tendential inflation reflects an acceleration of prices in some key items. Among these stand out:

  • unrelated food, which rise from +4.2% in June to +5.1%;
  • The processed food goods, which go from +2.7% to +3.1%.

Various services are also growing (+2.2%) and transport services (+3.4%). Another significant element is the acceleration of the prices of food goods, for the care of the house and the person, which go from +2.8% to +3.4%.

In contrast, the regulated energy goods, which go from +22.6% to +16.7%. Even more marked the flexion for non -regulated energy goods, which record a drop of -5.8% (was -4.2% in June), helping to mitigate the overall inflationary pressure.

Assoutenti, stunned by 6.7 billion euros

Italians face a food sting which, with the same consumption, is worth 6.7 billion euros per year in terms of greater expenditure for the purchase of food and drinks. It calculates it assets after the data on inflation released today by Istat. Explains President Gabriele Melluso:

In July, the lists of food products and soft drinks grow by +4.1% on year, with peaks of +5.1% for unspecified food. In terms of expenditure, this is equivalent to an aggravation of +375 euros per year for a family with two children.

From dairy products to meat, passing through eggs, rice, butter, chocolate, fresh fruit and drinks, all the more large consumption food products are recording sensitive increases. A situation that worries because these are primary goods that citizens cannot do without, whose increases affect the spending ability of families by eroding income and deeply changing the Italian food habits.
