The southern GDP grows more than that of the North-East and Trine Italy

THE’Istat He has released the data on Italian GDP divided by territorial areas. The detection showed that the South has aligned itself for growth at the average of the country, thanks above all to a strong increase in added value from the construction sector, driven by public investments. The area that has proven most in difficulty is the North-East.

Also at employment level, the South manages to stand out for growth, with a strong increase in the number of workers employed in various sectors. In this area he manages to do better than all, while the North-East confirms the effort shown by the trend of GDP, with an increase almost halved compared to the Italian average.

The South returns to grow

GDP growth data in 2024 at a territorial level, released byIstatshow that an area of the country is in clear difficulty. While North-West, Center and South run beyond the national average, the North-East economy is almost blocked.

The data confirms, for the South, a period of greater growth than in the past, when often the area was late regarding the development of production activities. Even if the recovery compared to the rest of the country that had been seen in the first quarters of 2024 is not taking place, the figure remains positive:

  • North-west: +0.9%;
  • North-East: +0.2%;
  • Center: +0.9%;
  • South and islands: +0.9%.

More problematic situation, however, for the North-East, which for decades had grown more than the average of the country and which instead last year showed a weaker economy than expected.

The sectors that grow more

The economic growth of the South is explained if you analyze the data relating to the sectors that have shown more economic liveliness in 2024. In the south it is the buildings that stand out, with an increase in the GDP product of 4.1%, much higher than the national average of 1.2%. This is the result of public investments, especially in the field of PNRR.

The construction of the infrastructures is suddenly accelerated in recent years, also given that the works, to receive European funding, will have to end by 2026

Also on employment the South beats the north-east

Another very positive fact for the south is that of employment. In this area the area manages to stand out compared to all the others, also detaching North-West and Center:

  • South and islands, +2.2% of employees;
  • Center, +1.8% employed;
  • North-west, +1.6% employed;
  • North-east, +0.9% employed.

The national average stands at 1.6%, and exactly as for GDP, only the North-East has remained below. The greater growth in employment in the South and in the center compared to the North-West, with identical economic growth, can be explained by the starting situation of the various geographical areas.

In the south the employment rate is less than 50%, while in the North it touches 70%, compared to a national average of 62.2%in 2024. In the South, consequently, there are many more people to be taken in the face of economic growth and therefore a greater need for labor.
