30% duties against the European Union starting from 1 August. Finally, the long -awaited Brussels also arrived in Brussels Letter by Donald Trump with the customs rates imposed from the United States to the EU.
The US President confirmed the hard line threatened for the products exported by the countries of the European Union, explaining the level of duties to try to cope with a commercial relationship “far from mutual being” and threatening further retaliation in the event of countermeasures.
Trump’s letter to the EU
In the letter sent to the European Commission and published by the Tycoon on his Social Truth, Trump addresses the president Ursula von der Leyen (hereinafter the full text):
It is a great honor for me to send you this letter, as it demonstrates the strength and commitment of our commercial relationship, and the fact that the United States of America have agreed to continue collaborating with the European Union, despite the fact that we have one of our greatest commercial deficits with you. However, we decided to go on, but only with more equipped and balanced exchanges. For this reason we invite you to collaborate with the extraordinary economy of the United States, the first market in the world, by far.
We had years to discuss our commercial relationship with the European Union and we concluded that we must move away from these Commercial deficits Long -term, large and persistent, caused by your rates and non -tariff policies and commercial barriers. Our relationship, unfortunately, has been anything but mutual.
Starting from 1 August 2025 we will impose a dice of 30% on all EU products sent to the United States, regardless of the product sectors. The freight goods to evade a higher duty will be subject to such a higher duty. Please understand that the 30% threshold is however less than necessary to eliminate the enormous commercial disparity we have with the EU.
As you know, there will be no duty if the European Union, or companies inside, decide to build or produce goods within the United States And, in fact, we will do everything possible to grant the necessary authorizations quickly, professional and routinely – in other words, within a few weeks.
The European Union will have full and complete access to the US market, without any duty applied, only if you eliminate the great commercial deficit. If for any reason you decide to increase your rates and apply countermeasuresthen, whatever the percentage you have chosen, it will be added to 30% that we apply.
Please understand that these rates are necessary to correct the many years of rates, policies and non -tariff barriers of the European Union, which have caused the great and unsustainable commercial deficits to the detriment of the United States. This deficit represents a severe threat For our economy and, in fact, for our national security!
The response of the European Union
The letter received from the European Union represents a tombstone to the negotiations enabled by Brussels with Washington, with which the 27 put the hopes of taking home 10% duties.
With a press release in response to the letter, the European Commission has announced that he had made note of the decision, ensuring that he wants to continue negotiating an agreement with the Trump administration and that he is ready to take the necessary measures to protect the EU of the EU.
The president’s comment did not even be waiting for von der leyen:
The imposition of 30 percent duties on EU exports would upset the main transatlantic supply chains, at the expense of businesses, consumers and patients on both banks of the Atlantic
One came from the Italian government Note of Palazzo Chigi with which the support in Brussels is affirmed at the news of the high level of the duties decided by Trump:
We trust in the goodwill of all the actors on the field to arrive at a fair agreement, which can strengthen the West as a whole, given that – particularly in the current scenario – it would have no sense to trigger a commercial clash between the two banks of the Atlantic
The duties to Mexico
The Missiva of the USA in Brussels preceded the one intended for a few minutes to Mexicowith the same percentage of rates at 30% and also in this case the threat of doubled the duties in case of counter -move in the commercial war:
Mexico helped me make the border safe, but what has been done is not enough. He has not yet stopped the signs that are trying to transform all of North America into the playground of the drug trafficking. I can’t allow it to happen!
