Scrapping and cutting of the Irpef “priority” in maneuver: the government plan

The cutting of the IRPEF and the scrapping of the folders will be on the list of priorities of the next maneuver. Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti has anticipated some of the issues that will enter the Budget Law of 2026, which the government will have to start elaborating in the autumn, after the publication of the update note of the Def.

The Minister of Economy has kept underlining that not all measures will receive the same attention, and that there is precisely a list of priorities, while not specifying what the interventions that will have precedence are.

The cutting of the IRPEF is supported by Fratelli d’Italia and Forza Italia, while the scrapping of the folders from the League.

Giorgetti’s “priorities” in maneuver

During the UDC national party, Giancarlo Giorgetti spoke of the next financial maneuver. The government will have to start working on us from the moment of the publication of the Nadef, but the first issues have already emerged.

The minister has anticipated in particular two:

  • the cut of the IRPEF for the so -called average class;
  • the scrapping of tax collection folders.

For the cutting of the IRPEF, according to the rumors leaked in recent weeks, the government would like to lower from 35% to 33% the Irpef rate that today concerns income between 33,000 and 50,000 euros. This reform would also bring the maximum limit of this bracket to 60,000 euros.

The scrapping of the folders, on the other hand, would work similarly to the four past versions of this rule. It provides for the installment of debts with the tax authorities, up to 120 installments in 10 years without any sanction or interest.

Regarding these two rules, Giorgetti said:

Irpef cut and scrapping? Our goal is to do these things, of course following a list of priorities. We have shown with the facts that we are able to do it.

Attention to Giorgetti’s accounts

However, the Minister of Economy made it clear that the government has no intention of deviating from the policy of reducing public spending which in recent years has characterized the budget laws developed by the executive led by Giorgia Meloni.

Giorgetti also reassured that there will be no corrective maneuver:

Of course there are other factors that affect and affect the programming to be taken into account, as all the responsible series people do. We will continue with tax relief and there will be no corrective maneuver, because there is no need to correct a route that the referees already tell us to be the right route.

The covers of the maneuver

The “referees” to whom Giorgetti refers are the rating agencies and markets, who are rewarding the policy of attention to the government’s public finances. The spread and yields of Italian government bonds have been at the minimum for years, and this has allowed the executive to save 13 billion euros of treasure for the maneuver.

However, the Minister of Economy reiterated that, in order to know the details of the covers for the Budget Law, Nadef will have to wait, which will also contain the official government forecasts for the growth of the country.

Giorgetti stressed:

What we are doing is to rationalize expenditure as much as possible, to reduce taxes. As part of these taxes, there are those who somehow have to be protected more and that perhaps less protections deserve. However, these are political assessments that will be made only when the priority framework will be defined. I can’t only do them because I’m not a financial dictator.
