Supersmart Minori Poste deposit with a 2% rate, how much does it really pay

Anyone who wants to make some savings for their children, without risks, can also do it from scratch with Poste Italiane. One of the simplest tools is the Supersmart Minors Deposit, which yields 2% gross per year and is guaranteed by the State. It is activated on the postal savings account in the minor’s name and is managed by a parent or guardian.

How it works and how much it really pays

The Supersmart Minor Deposit is not a separate product, but a function of the Minor Booklet: it consists in setting aside, i.e. blocking, part of the sums already deposited for 182 days, approximately 6 months, obtaining in exchange a higher interest than the ordinary return.

The 2% is an annual rate and gross, i.e. before taxes, and is only recognized upon maturity.

Since the term is about half a year, the actual interest is more or less half that. Taxes must then be deducted from the result, i.e. a withholding tax of 26% on interest and the stamp duty of 0.2% per year on the sums set aside, with a minimum of 1 euro.

A provision of 1,000 euros for 182 days, therefore, will yield around 10 euros, which drops to just over 6 euros net after withholding tax and stamp duty. The exact calculation can be done with the simulator on the Post Office website.

How much to pay and what happens if you need the money first

The provision starts from a minimum of 500 euros, which can be increased by multiples of 50 euros and up to a maximum of 15,000 euros, which is also the limit of money that the child’s booklet can contain.

The sums are not blocked. They can be withdrawn at any time, even partially, for at least 50 euros at a time and leaving no less than 500 euros on the deposit.

But be careful: sums withdrawn before the deadline yield only 0.01% per year, the minimum rate of the passbook. Those who cancel in advance almost completely waive the interest.

Who can activate it, where and at what cost

The deposit can only be opened by a parent or guardian, in the passbook registered in the minor’s name, and each deposit must be completed before the child turns 18.

There are no opening, management or closing costs: you only pay taxes.

The operation is done in the post office or online, on the Post Office website or from the app, if the parent is authorized to operate remotely. If the minor’s booklet has not yet been opened, it must be opened first.

The Supersmart Deposit for minors is especially suitable for those who can leave a sum fixed for the entire semester and are looking for a simple and safe instrument, rather than a high-yield investment.

The complete conditions are in the Information Sheet of the Minors Booklet, in force from 20 June 2026 and available on the Poste Italiane website.
