The European Union aims to progressively eliminate the imports of gas and oil from Russia By the end of 2027 The objective of the regulation is to strengthen energy autonomy and competitiveness of the Union.
There is one derogation for countries without the outlets on the sea, such as Hungary And Slovakiawho will be able to continue importing gas from Russia until the end of 2027.
The EU proposal
The proposal for the regulation presented by the Commission provides for the gradual elimination of imports both of gas transported via Gasdotto and of Gnl from the Russian Federation or exported directly or indirectly by Russian subjects. The text also introduces measures to facilitate the complete interruption of Russian oil imports by End of 2027. To this end, the Member States will have to present diversification plans, with clear objectives and concrete measures to gradually abandon energy dependence on Moscow.
By the end of 2027, all long -term contracts for the import of gas and oil from Russia will have to be interrupted. In addition, the stipulation of new long -term contracts will be prohibited for the use of GNL terminals by Russian customers or controlled by Russian companies.
The objectives of the Repowerue Plan
The intent is to free capabilities in European terminals, allocating it to alternative suppliers. According to the Commission, a gradual approach will allow you to reduce the impact on energy prices and guarantee the safety of supplies within the Union.
The legislative proposal is part of the roadmap published in early May to reduce energy dependence on Moscow, in line with the objectives of the plan Repowereu.
Most of the most contracts with Russia expires
According to the data of the European Commission chaired by Ursula von der Leyen, in 2024 the imports of Russian gas initially increased up to 54 billion cubic meters (32 through gas pipelines and 20 in the form of GNL), and then dropped to about 35 billion, equivalent to 12% of the needs total union. A third of the contracts currently in force with Russia has a duration of less than 12 months, configuring itself as short -term agreements, while the remaining two thirds are long -term contracts.
Von der leyen said:
Russia has repeatedly tried to blackmail us using energy as a weapon. We made clear decisions to definitively close the taps and put an end to the era of Russian fossil fuels in Europe.
The remaining Russian gas volumes, according to the community executive, can be gradually eliminated Without significant economic impacts or risks for the safety of the supply, thanks to the availability of sufficient alternative suppliers in the global gas market, a well -interconnected gas market market and the availability of adequate import infrastructures in the EU.
How much gas we import from Russia
Currently, the European Union still matters about 35 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Russia, as reported a high European official. Of these, 20 billion are made up of liquefied natural gas (GNL), coming from the Jamal peninsula, in the sea of Kara (north -western Siberia), and transported by ship to regasification terminals located in France, Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium.
The remaining 15 billion cubic meters come through the pipeline Turkstreamwhich connects Russia to Eastern Thrace, Greece, passing through the Black Sea, and also supplies Hungary, Slovakia and Greece.
