Face to face between Matteo Salvini and Giancarlo Giorgetti on the Maneuver. The Northern League secretary met with the other Northern League minister for a summit on the Budget Law being examined in the Senate. After expressing some observations to the MEF owner on the text approved by the Council of Ministers, the deputy prime minister wanted to clarify some measures that did not go down well with the party, in the presence of the League’s economic control room.
So much so that Giorgetti was forced to release some clarifications to the press.
The meeting between Salvini and Giorgetti on the Maneuver
The Northern League summit was hosted by Matteo Salvini at the MIT, with participants including the undersecretary of labour, Claudio Durigon, the head of the party departments, Armando Siri, together with the senator Claudio Borghi and the deputy Alberto Bagnai, as well as the Minister of Economy.
The deputy prime minister wanted to take stock of some of the chapters of the 2026 budget that have caused discussion among the majority in recent weeks, in particular the contribution requested from the banks and the increase from 21% to 26% in the flat rate tax rate for short-term rentals.
However, other issues that are indigestible to the secretary of the Northern League are also on the table, such as the cuts announced on some infrastructural works, such as the metro and motorways, and others on which he wanted clarification from Giancarlo Giorgetti, such as the house bonuses and the expansion of the group of beneficiaries of the scrapping quinquies of the tax bills.
Giorgetti’s clarifications
At the end of the Northern League control room, the head of the Ministry of Economy made it a point to explain that both on contributions to banks and on taxes on short-term rentals, it is Parliament that has to say the last word:
Do you think that the Minister of Economy decides everything? I am neither the Pope nor Trump. It is Parliament that decides these things.
Upon leaving the summit, Giorgetti explained that no reduction in resources for infrastructure is envisaged, but rather that an “account-saving” mechanism has been included in the Maneuver which links the availability to the progress of the works, to avoid blocking public funds.
We came to MIT and also clarified with Salvini regarding this fake news of the alleged cuts to infrastructure. We have clarified that these are temporal remodulations, there is no cut.
Matteo Salvini also expressed his opinion on the hypothesis of cutting infrastructure during question time in the Chamber, clarifying that no resources intended to finance public works will be diverted for the construction of the Bridge over the Strait.
It is false that if the bridge is built all the other works in Calabria and Sicily will not be done. We are investing 23 billion euros in Sicily and 22 billion in Calabria, today with this amount of investment not building the Bridge would make no sense.
Giancarlo Giorgetti also spoke about imaginative reconstructions when responding to those who asked him about the allocations for the Rome, Milan and Naples metros, for which he gave reassurances.
Guarantees from the minister also on the resources for the bonuses of the Housing Plan, also dear to Giorgia Meloni, which will arrive as early as 2026 both from the Climate fund and from the Development and cohesion fund.
