The inflation of May from North to South

Istat made known today the territorial data of May inflation, on the basis of which the National Consumer Union has compiled the ranking of dear cities of Italy, in terms of increasing the cost of living. Not only that, therefore, of the cities of the regional or municipalities with more than 150 thousand inhabitants.

The most expensive cities

At the top of the ranking, Bolzano Where tendential inflation equal to +2.3%, the third largest in Italy ex aequo with other cities such as Venice and Naples, translates into the greater additional expenditure on an annual basis, equivalent to 763 euros for an average family. Silver medal for Syracuse which, with +3%, the highest inflation in Italy, has an increase in annual expenditure of 695 euros per family. On the lowest step of the podium Pistoiawhich with +2.4%, the second highest inflation in the country, has the third greater additional expenditure, equal to 649 euros per year for a type.

In fourth place Venice who, with an inflation of 2.3%, records a sting of 645 euros. Padua follow ( +2.2%, +606 euros), Rimini ( +2.1%and +578 euros), in seventh place Belluno ( +2.2%, +573 euros), then Bologna ( +2%, +560 euros) and Bergamo ( +1.8%, +544 euros). The top ten Arezzo closes with +541 euros and an inflation of 2 percent.

On the other front of the ranking, the most virtuous city in Italy is Olbia-Tempiowhere with +0.8%, the lowest inflation in Italy ex aequo with Parma and Lodi, there is an annual increase of 159 euros. In second place Sassari+0.9% and a greater cost of living of 179 euros. Bronze medal for Benevento+0.9% and +199 euros. Follow, in the ranking of the saving cities, Parma ( + 0.8%, + 220 euros), Novara, Lodi, Brindisi, Caserta and Pisa. Closes the best top ten, with 249 euros, Aosta (+0.9%).

The most expensive regions

At the top of the ranking of the most “expensive” regions, with an annual inflation at +1.9%, the Trentino which records an average aggravation of 587 euros on a family on an annual basis. Follows the Friuli-Venezia Giulia ( +1.7%, +466 euros) and in third place the Veneto with +457 euros and an inflation of 1.7%. The most saving region is the Aosta Valley: +0.9% and +249 euros. In second position Sardinia ( +1.4%, +269 euros), in third Molise.

Where the increases are recorded

In May 2025 inflation General slows down, descending at 1.6% on an annual basis, after the +1.9% recorded in the previous month. On a monthly basis, however, there is a slight decrease of 0.1%. These are the final data published today by Istat, slightly lower than the preliminary estimate that indicated an increase of 1.7%.

Analyzing the trend on a trend basis compared to May 2024, the sectors that record inflation higher than the general index are:

  • education (+3%);
  • Food products and soft drinks (+3.2%);
  • receptive and catering services (+3.4%)
  • Housing, water, electricity and fuels (+3.9%).

On the contrary, transport (-1.9%) and communications (-4.3%) show a negative variation. Despite the general reduction of inflation, there is an acceleration of prices in the shopping cart: i goods foodfor the care of the house and the person they go from +2.6% to a +2.7%. The prices of high -frequency products, on the other hand, descend slightly, going from +1.6% to +1.5%.
