Trump returns to the duties with 12 letters threat to the EU

Donald Trump has returned to talk about duties. The deadline of 9 July is approaching and for this reason it has announced that it has signed about 12 letters (the number is not yet confirmed) intended for commercial partners. These should be sent on Monday.

Trump defined the sending of letters as a positive step for both sides, but in the meantime he returns to threaten the EU with duties at 17%, in particular on the agri -food reader. What scares the most is the possibility of do not get to an agreementless desirable outcome even than an unbalanced compromise in favor of the United States.

The 12 letters: new “threats” of Trump

Donald Trump said he signed some letters that will be sent on Monday 7 July, with just two days of margin compared to the ultimatum of 9 July. The theme is obviously that of duties and recipients should be the main commercial partners of the United States, the same ones with which Trump should have opened up negotiations.

Path never started and indeed abandoned by the United States in favor of silence, expectation and the famous 12 letters. Trump explained: “The letters are better. It is much easier to send one.” It is a process simplifiedbecause the president will not have to dialogue with the commercial partners, but only send letters with the tariff levels that countries will have to face on the assets exported to the United States. It would be an offer “take or leave”.

Trump, who spoke with a journalist aboard the Air Force One during his journey to New Jersey, however refused to reveal the names of the 12 countries involved. The news will be made public on Monday.

Still up -to -date duties

The commercial war begins to be confused between raised duties then blocked, countries with different rates and now also the famous 12 letters. Taking a step back, remember that in April Trump had announced a 10% tariff rate as a base for different countries. Others, on the other hand, would have suffered greater rates, some up to 50%.

Those declarations on the duties had frightened many countries and markets, alarming producers, citizens, companies and politicians from all over the world. A reaction that then led Trump to suspend the duties for 90 days (while maintaining the 10%rate) to start negotiations and conclude agreements.

Those negotiations have never ended and now, a few days after the expiry of the suspension, Trump signed the famous 12 letters. Last Friday 4 July the president confirmed that the duties could be even higher than those announced in April, arriving up to 70%. For the start we speak of 1 August.

Who has closed an agreement and who does not

Donald Trump wanted to do in a few days, or in a few months, what the United States had managed to do in years of negotiations. But everything did not go according to the floors.

It is true that the Trump administration has managed to bring home some victory, closing agreements with some countries, but the commercial war has not yet been won. The commercial agreements achieved are:

  • with the United Kingdom, 10% rate (preferential treatment for some sectors, such as automotive and aeronautical engines);
  • With Vietnam, an agreement for 20%, with various US products free from duties.

Among the non -concrete negotiations there are those with India and with the EU. Diplomics confirm that the objectives have not been achieved.

And Italy? The relationship between Meloni and Trump It is among the most interesting in these negotiations. Just the Italian Premier is among the supporters of an agreement with the Trump administration and reiterated it during his speech at the forum in the farm. He said he heard Trump and that he worked “to make sure that the relationship with the US was frank and constant, aimed at trying to solve the problems together”. According to Meloni “we must consider ourselves satisfied to have managed to reconstruct a dialogue, but everyone has to do his part”.
