AI and its impact on expense management and personal finance: the VISA study

Italians see things more and more positively the role of AI nin their lives: this is what the Visa study highlights “The Future is Here” according to which 47% of Italians interviewed say they have a positive view of artificial intelligence and its capabilities, in general. 44% of those interviewed believe that AI can have a positive impact on their personal lives, while 43% believe that it can provide support in the workplace. Furthermore, the study highlights the key role assigned to AI in security, whether it is online banking and payments (41%) or fraud detection (39%).

AI, confidence grows

“These data highlight the growing importance of artificial intelligence in the Italian socioeconomic context. Safety and reliability have always been an absolute priority for us. In 1993, Visa was the first network to implement AI-based technology for risk and fraud management, pioneering the use of AI models in payments. Our technology platform is one of the most powerful examples of the tangible benefits of artificial intelligence – he emphasizes Stefano M. Stoppani, Country Manager Visa Italia, who adds: “In the last year we managed to prevent over 40 billion in frauds thanks to our technological investments, including those in AI”.

Almost half (44%) of the Italians interviewed believe that AI can have a positive impact on own personal life. This trust is particularly widespread among adults aged 45-64 (47%), followed by young people between 18 and 34 (46%).

Additionally, more than a quarter (28%) of respondents would be willing to let AI handle their loan application if it could automate the process safely. Those who think this are above all adults in the 35-44 age group (34%), a percentage which drops to 23% among young people between 18 and 34 years old.

Investment management also finds space among the activities that Italians would entrust to AI; around a quarter of those interviewed (26%) would let AI manage their portfolio, with a greater propensity among the youngest in the 18-34 age group (33%), as well as delegating the possibility of invest in shares and securities (25%), with almost a third (30%) of young people between 18 and 34 in favour, compared to 40% of over 65s.

On the expense front, over a third of Italians (36%) would rely on AI to manage activities such as paying monthly bills, even in this area the 35-44 age group is the most open to this possibility (41%).

AI in the world of work

Even in the work context, AI is perceived as a powerful tool for improving the efficiency and innovation of activities. More than 2 out of 5 Italians interviewed (43%) believe it can have a positive impact on their professional life, with 45% of young people (18-34 years) declaring themselves in favor of its use.

This growing trust in AI as a work tool reflects the change in the way companies and workers see automation: in fact, according to 57% of Italians interviewed, AI is an opportunity to save time in daily operations, facilitating managing repetitive tasks and allowing you to concentrate on higher value-added activities. Those who think this are especially young people between 18 and 34 years old (63%), compared to those over 65 (52%).

In Italy, fraud detection is the area where AI has the greatest potential for 39% of people surveyed. Above all, those over 65 (46%) think this, compared to 36% of young people in the 18-34 age group.

Furthermore, 41% of Italians interviewed believe that AI can improve the security of banking operations and online payments. This trust is particularly widespread among adults aged 45-64 (44%); on the contrary, only 36% of over 65s share this vision.
