Google he presented at the last one Google I/Othe Mountain View giant's conference for developers, a new “AI version” of the search engine called AI Overviews which integrates generative artificial intelligence. This will make it easier for users to search through AI-generated summaries and support for complex and detailed questions. The feature is currently only present in the US and UK, but should reach approx. by the end of the year one billion users.
Google does not want to lose its primacy in the search engine sector which, according to some, would be threatened by artificial intelligence OpenAI (the company that develops ChatGPT, Sora, DALL-E and Voice Engine) and, in this case, by its alleged search engine (not yet officially presented).

How Google Search Will Change with AI Overviews

With the introduction of AI Overviews summaries Google search will change profoundly to make it easier for users to find useful and comprehensive information. In describing the innovations based on artificial intelligence, Google stated bluntly:

You can ask anything that's on your mind or needs to be done, and Google will do the research, planning, and brainstorming for you. This is all made possible by a new Gemini model customized for Google Search. It brings together Gemini's advanced capabilities – including multi-step reasoning, planning and multimodality – with our best-in-class search systems.

Conceptually, it is as if Google had decided to “merge” its search engine algorithm with the advanced one of Gemini (its AI model). But what does this innovation mean for us users in practice? Here are some examples.

  • AI Summaries: obtaining a quick overview of a topic, with related in-depth links to consult if necessary, can certainly be advantageous from the point of view of the speed with which information can be found from the Web.
  • More complex questions: thanks to Gemini's multi-step reasoning capabilities, when carrying out searches on Google it will no longer be necessary to “break up” the requests into multiple questions and, consequently, into different searches, as it will be possible to ask more detailed questions in a single request. complex, containing all the details necessary to find more relevant information and data.
  • Search results organized by AI: Rather than generating a long list of links, Google's new search engine will include information grouped under unique AI-generated titles, which include various types of content.
  • Questions in video format: Since pictures are worth a thousand wordsthe ability to use visual search functions will be particularly convenient for finding the answer to questions that concern real situations and scenarios that surround us, without the hassle of having to find the right words to describe a problem or request.
  • Advance planning: Google search, thanks to AI, can also be used as an advance planning tool for meals, trips, parties, appointments, etc.
On desktop, a user enters the search query: “Create a 3-day easy-to-prepare meal plan for a group.” The AI summary shows results broken down by day; within each day there are recipe cards that link to cooking sites. The user replaces recipes that he does not want. Credits: Google.

When will the “new” Google be available in Italy?

If you noticed, when describing Google's new search functions we used the future tense. This is because at the moment has not yet been announced when the news in question will be available in Italy.

Some features, like AI summaries, are already available in the USA and UK and, according to what Google declared, they will reach it by the end of the year one billion users in different countries.
