A new recall of food products puts Italian consumers on alert, with sultanas present in a supermarket being the subject of a recall note (from the company itself) due to possible risks. The alarm, in fact, was issued due to possible chemical contamination of the food found on the shelves of Decò supermarkets, with the chain itself publishing the note on its website asking its customers not to consume the product itself.
Traces of pesticide in sultanas
The alarm launched by the Decò supermarket chain comes after a check carried out on sultanas Noberascoa brand that produces its products in Paletta a Carcare, in the province of Savona. In fact, the analyzes revealed the possible presence of active ingredient Chlorpyrifosa pesticide used to kill insects and worms.
The traces, obviously, could cause problems for human health if the product were consumed in large quantities. Which is why Decò decided to issue the recall note, warning its customers of the possible risks associated with the consumption of sultanas.
The batch affected by the recall
With a recall note dated 27 September 2024, the Decò supermarket chain announced that the product affected by the recall due to the possible presence of traces of pesticide it’s theorganic sultanas – Organic Raisins of the Noberasco brand.
Produced, as mentioned, by Noberasco Spa of the Bagnoli Region in Albenga, in the province of Savona and with a production plant in Paletta a Carcare, also in Savona, the sultanas subject to the recall are those with a production batch L4093A And expires 10/2025.
To recognize the offending package just pay attention to some details such as:
- the packaging is green (to recall its organic nature);
- the Noberasco brand logo is clearly visible on a red background;
- on the packaging there are the words “Easy to feel good” and “Raisins, Raisin, Roisinen, Rozijn”;
- the weight of the plastic bag is 250g.
Traces of the pesticide
Chlorpyrifos, also known as Chlorpyrifos or Cpsis an organophosphate pesticide used to kill parasites including insects and worms. It is used on crops, animals, and buildings, but it is a substance that has been banned in the United States.
In agriculture, it is “one of the most popular organophosphate insecticides” in the United States and was one of the most widely used residential insecticides before being phased out for home use.
It is not harmful to humans in itself, but is considered moderately dangerous. In fact, exposure that exceeds recommended levels has been linked to adverse effects on neurological systems, persistent developmental disorders and autoimmune disorders.
The previous one with raisins
However, the Noberasco sultana is not the first to be recalled. If in this circumstance it was the Decò supermarket chain that directly “self-reported” the possible risks of the product offered for sale in the aisles of its branches, a few days ago the Ministry of Health had issued a recall note for a similar product.
We are talking about two batches of organic sultanas and a mix of dried fruit with branded raisins MorgenLandproduced in Germany, due to an unspecified chemical risk.
