Seasoned Coppa Recalled for Listeria Risk, the Brand and Lots Affected

In Italy we continue to talk about possible risks of microbiological contamination from Listeria. After the latest alarms and major recalls in the past few weeks, the Ministry of Health has announced that it has decided to recall of a product present on supermarket shelves as a precaution.

This is about the Seasoned Coppa produced by Industria Salumi Simonini Spa present in supermarkets under the Salumeria del Corso or Stella Montis brands.

Recall for the seasoned Coppa

As reported by the Ministry of Health through two notes published on its website, the seasoned Coppa subject to recall is the one produced by Simonini Spa Salumi Industrya factory located in via per Modena in Castelvetro, in the province of Bologna. This is a product that can be found on supermarket shelves under the Salumeria del Corso or Stella Montis brands.

For this reason the Ministry has opted for two different recall notes.

For the seasoned Coppa with brand Delicatessen of the Course the Ministry issued a note in which it announced that the production batch 5524226, with expiry date 11 November 2024 and 90g package, with plant identification mark IT946LCE, is at risk. In fact, as a precaution, the product was recalled due to the suspected presence of listeria monocytogenes.

For the seasoned Coppa with brand Star Mountinstead, the Ministry issued another note in which it announced that the production batch 5524226with Expires November 11, 2024 and 100g pack, with factory identification mark IT946LCEhas the same risk of microbiological contamination. In fact, as a precaution, the product has been recalled due to the suspected presence of listeria monocytogenes.

In both cases, as can be read in the warnings, the product is requested to be returned to the point of sale where it was purchased. Therefore, consumers are asked, implicitly, not to consume the seasoned Coppa to avoid the possible consequences caused by infection from the bacterium that could cause listeriosis.

The warning comes after the large-scale recall of salad, again due to the risk of listeria, which occurred in recent days.

Listeria Alert, What is it?

The intake of food contaminated by Listeria monocytogenes can have serious consequences for human health. The bacterium, if ingested, can cause a disease known as listeriosis, whose effects range from mild symptoms to potentially fatal complications.

Mild symptoms include:

  • fever;
  • diarrhea;
  • nausea and vomiting;
  • muscle pain;
  • flu-like symptoms.

In severe symptoms, however:

  • meningitis;
  • encephalitis;
  • septicemia;
  • miscarriages and premature births.

In addition, some people are more at risk. These include pregnant women, newborns, and the elderly.

The diagnosis of listeriosis It is usually confirmed by blood or cerebrospinal fluid tests. The main treatment is antibiotics, administered promptly to reduce the risk of serious complications. In more serious cases, hospitalization is also necessary.

But as always, prevention is better than cure. Prevention of listeriosis requires proper handling and cooking of food, because it is essential to thoroughly cook meat and fish, as well as avoiding the consumption of unpasteurized milk and cheeses produced with it, to avoid any type of infection.

Kitchen hygiene also plays a crucial role, as fruit and vegetables must be washed thoroughly and surfaces and utensils must be cleaned after handling raw foods to prevent contamination.
