How much does it cost to full with the increases

The Council of Ministers of today 13 March 2025 gave the green light to Excise reform On petrol and diesel, which will bring increases for those who drive a diesel car and reductions for those who use green. The measure, which will finance local public transport, is also foreseen within the National recovery and resilience plan And it is motivated by the government and by the need to reduce harmful environmental subsidies, aligning the taxation to effective fuel consumption.

The goal is to gradually cancel, within 5 years, the difference between the current excise duties, which today are equal to:

  • 0.617 euros per liter for diesel;
  • 0.728 euros for petrol.

How excise duties change on petrol and diesel

According to the scheme of the legislative decree of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, approved in the preliminary phase by Parliament and now the examination of the CDM, the excise duties will be modified every year with an interministerial decree signed by the MEF itself and the dicaster of transport, the environment and agriculture.

The text of the DL provides:

  • An increase on diesel between 1 and 1.5 cents per liter every year for 5 years;
  • the reduction on petrol excise duties for the same amount;
  • The exemption for road hauliers – given that commercial diesel will not undergo changes.

How much more will those who use diesel will spend more

To deal with Italian families in his pocket, the Codaconswhich launches the alarm on increases For those who own a diesel car. Currently out of 40 million private vehicles, 40.9% are Diesel. These are 16.6 million cars for which full will cost more significantly:

  • 0.61 euros for a full full of 50 liters if the increase will be 1 cent per liter (in fact, the VAT must be included);
  • 0.915 euros if the increase is 1.5 cents per liter.

With two full full per month, therefore, the families will pay almost 15 euros For each diesel car in the first scenario and almost 22 euros in the second.

The Italians will pay a total of 243 million euros in one year and 1.21 billion euros in 5 years with an increase of 1 cent per liter, which will transform respectively into 364.5 million euros e 1.82 billion with an increase of 1.5 cents.

Savings for those who use petrol

If on the one hand the diesel car owners will increase the refueling costs, those who own a petrol car will benefit from one reduction of shopping.

It is estimated that with 1 penalism less Italian families will pay 249.7 million euros per year, equal to 1.25 billion in 5 years. The reduction of 1.5 cents per liter will instead translate into 374.5 million euros per year, for a total of 1.87 billion in five years.

Because excise duties change on fuels

The current difference in taxation Between petrol and diesel it is no longer justified, neither from the point of view of internal consumption nor by the environmental one. Diesel, in fact, is more polluting in terms of CO2 emissions and its consumption is clearly higher than that of petrol.

The realignment of excise duties is among the obligations set by the PNRR. The repoweru involves the progressive reduction of environmentally harmful subsidies by 2024.

In addition to the environmental aspect, however, it is necessary to consider the impact on the pockets of commuters And of those who use the car for work: the exclusion of truck drivers (on strike to the bitter end) is not enough.

Among the controversial voices there is that of Codacons, which underlines the risk that the increases can affect the cascade on the prices of goods and services, increasing inflation.
